Douglas seals
"On the seal o"On the seal of Humphrey de Bohun in 1322 the guige is held by a
swan, the badge of the Earls of Hereford; and in 1356 the shield of
the first Earl of Douglas is supported by a lion whose head is
covered by the crested helm, a fashion of which there are many
examples. A helmed lion holds the shield of Magnus I., Duke of
Brunswick, in 1326.
"On several of our more ancient seals
only one supporter is represented, and probably the earliest example
of this arrangement occurs on the curious seal of William, first
Earl of Douglas (c. 1356), where the shield is supported from behind
by a lion 'sejant,' with his head in the helmet, which is surmounted
by the crest.
"On the seal of Archibald, fourth Earl of
Douglas (c. 1418), the shield is held, along with a club, in the
right hand of a savage erect, who bears a helmet in his left; while
on that of William, eighth Earl (1446), a kneeling savage holds a
club in his right hand, and supports a couché shield on his left
arm."

Archibald, 1st Duke of Touraine

The seal to the right is that of his wife, Princess Margaret of

Duchess of Touraine, daughter of King
Robert III of Scotland |
Notes:
1. If this is indeed the seal of James, Lord Douglas, the Good Sir James' son, then it is the first use of the heart
2. There is another Le Hardi seal, from 1270,
when he sold his lands to go on crusade, which came from Selby deeds;
his father was still alive (I think) and the seal has a man’s head
couped at the neck that corresponds with the court records where his
father William long legs testified that de Umfraville’s 100 men from
Redesdale nearly cut young William’s head off in the attack on the
Douglas manor of Fawdon. Another was used between 1288 and 1298.
3. This armorial is used by the Doddridge family.
A Douglas connection has yet to be identified.
