The Cressida, a steam ship, was built by Messrs. A. & J. Inglis in Pointhouse, Glasgow in 1889 for the 19th Earl of Morton(1)

Captain John Kendall from Falmouth, who was in command of Lord Morton's 199-ton steam yacht 'Cressida', noticed that HMS Victorious, which was anchored at the mouth of the River Scaddle, opposite Conaglen House, and was the flagship of Admiral Francis Bridgeman, was saved from the rocks by his actions.

[from Oban Times and Argyllshire Advertiser - Saturday 05 October 1895]: The following yachts were in the bay during the week:- Elida, ss, Mr Currie; Aileo, cut, RN.Y, Club; Alcyone, cut, RC.Y. Club; Jason, ss, Mr Bilby; Ixia, ss, Mr Guthrie; Abona, ss, Mr Sheldon; Ventura, yawl, Mr W. Lansdowne Beale; Lufra, yawl, 222 tons, Lady Miles; Maria, ss, Mr Stewart; Star of the Sea, ss, Mr Worrall; Griffin, ss, Mr Munro; Dubhran, ss, Mr Smith; Marita, ss, Sir Donald Smith; Vida, ss, Mr Ness; Cressida, ss, Lord Morton; Chrysalis, ss, Mr Boulby; Marjorie, ss, Mr Akroyd; Kelpie, ss, Mr Courtauld; St Elian, ss, Col. William W. Edwards 43 17/03/1918 was a Fireman Mercantile Marine on S.S. "Cressida" (Southampton) United Kingdom when he was killed on 17th March 1918.   Born at Newport, he was the son of Mrs. Mary Anne Evans; husband of Hannah Edwards (nee James), of Brondsbury House, Newport, Pembrokeshire.  He is remembered on the Tower Hill memorial, London.  It is assumed the Cressida was taken up for the war.  Cressida was on a voyage from Preston to Dublin with a cargo of coal when she was sunk by German submarine U-103 with the loss of three lives.

Notes:
1.  The Royal Yacht Squadron records show the owner as the 21st Earl, who was born in 1927!
