Rupert

Rupert Douglas-Bate was born on 7th September 1963 and brought up in Iran, but is in fact half Scottish, quarter Irish and quarter English and is therefore of mixed origins.

In his teens he decided he wanted to become an aid worker and went on to study agriculture and water engineering at university, where he was nearly thrown out at one stage but managed to scrape back on to track.

Since graduating he has survived various other scrapes, some near death, doing refugee relief and development work in Africa the Middle East and Eastern Europe. This work has provided the motivation to found www.mapaction.org and now www.globalmapaid.org.

Along the way he got married, then divorced, but now enjoys a lively friendship with ex-wife and their three brilliant children, Laura, Sam, and Toby. At one stage he did Royal Navy officer training, but pulled out with a feeling that humanitarian work was still his calling.

He loves remarkable conversation, and is fond of international affairs, poetry, art and art house movies. Later in life he went to Stanford University in the USA, on a Reuters Fellowship, and now runs an organic food business in Bath and Bristol, whilst taking care of www.globalmapaid.org .
