Malcolm Douglas, B.A. 1900 Yale, was the son of Charles Henry Douglas,
secretary and later partner Root Manufacturing Co., makers of knit
goods, Albany. He was grandson of John Duncan & Catherine Jane (Miller)
Douglass. His mother, Sarah Martha (Root) Douglas, was daughter of
Josiah Goodrich and Martha (Mead) Root. His uncle, George Douglass, was
a 1864 Yale grad.
Malcolm was a member Les Miserables, Andover
Club, Eta Phi, Psi Upsilon, and Skull and Bones. He attended Albany
Medical College 1900-04 (MD 1904), resident physician Albany City
Hospital 1903-05, engaged in special work in pathology and bacteriology
Bender Hygienic Laboratory, Albany, 1906-07, practiced medicine Albany
1907-17, clinical assistant Albany Medical College 1903-05, instructor
in histology 1906-08, histology and physical diagnosis 1908-10, physical
diagnosis 1910-11, physical diagnosis and therapy 1911-13, medicine and
therapy 1913-15, and medicine 1915-20, dispensary physician Albany
Hospital 1907-11, assistant attending physician Tuberculosis Department
1910-13 and attending physician 1913-20.
He was commissioned
Captain June 14, 1917, attended Medical Officers Training Camp, Fort
Benjamin Harrison, overseas May 3, 1918-Aug. 17, 1919; stationed at U S
Army Base Hospital No 33, Portsmouth, England, served with American
North Russia Expeditionary Force, Archangel, and on Dvina River front
May-June, 1919. He was decorated with Cross of St Anne (Russia), cited
in general orders No. 11, Headquarters A.E.F , North Russia, July
19,1919, discharged August 18,1919, with rank of Major. Dr. Douglas
did not resume practice of medicine after the war, traveled extensively,
living in Tahiti for several months in 1920 and in 1921 visiting Samoa,
the Tonga Islands, Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand.
In recent
years had resided in Santa Barbara. He was a member All Saints by the
Sea Church (Episcopal), Montecito.
Malcolm married Nov. 26, 1928,
in Paris, France, to Rachel Peabody, daughter of Frederick Forest &
Blanche (Griffith) Peabody. No children.
They lived in
The Malcolm Douglas House,
on Sycamore Canyon Road in Montecito, California, USA
His Ashes
were scattered on the Pacific Ocean.
Survived by wife, a sister, Mrs Charles H
Wilson of New York City, and two brothers, Charles H. Douglas of Cohoes,
N Y, and Kenneth R. Douglas. Another brother, Duncan Douglas,
died Jan. 21,1920.
