Sir James Douglas, 1st Lord of Dalkeith

Sir James, son of Sir James of Dalkeith by his first wife, was married in 1387 to Elizabeth, daughter of King Robert III. He was granted (March 21, 1382) a charter of the Barony of Morton with Mordingtoun and Whittinghame. At that time he also received the title of a Lord of Parliament as "Lord Dalkeith".

In 1373, Sir James Douglas, first Lord of Dalkeith, undertook a pilgrimage to Canterbury, for the accomplishment of which a safe conduct was given him. He received from King Robert II. various other charters; and by his marriage with Agnes Dunbar, daughter of Patrick, ninth Earl of March, he had access to sixteen possessions, which were among the 'greater barons' of Scotland. He granted the lands of Quyt and Fethan, in the county of Peebles, for the support of a chaplain in the chapel of Dalkeith, which was confirmed by Robert II., at Irvine, on the 25th October 1377. He likewise founded and endowed an hospital(1).

His first son, William, was born in 1390 and predeceased his father circa 1425. Sir James died circa 1441.
