Preamble • Caroline Sidney Douglas, the daughter of
Sir John
Douglas and Charlotte Hopkinson, married Vincenzo Fenzi in Tuscany in 1826, and may have had a child, Giovonni Oraze Alfredo Douglas Fenzi, in
Garvald the following year.
Sir John was the son of Lewis Douglas of Garvald. • The
following notes are an attempt to link those with the surname Douglas de
Fenzi as being descendants of the Douglas of Garvald family.

Douglas, is named as Charlotte Sidney Douglas in that article.
It is of note that her sister is also not clearlly idenified. • Vincenzo Fenzi (as above?? or not?) estimated
born between 1762 and 1822, Son of lacopo Orazio Fenzi and Luisa Bardini,
brother of Emanuele Fenzi(2) and Filippo Fenzi. • Charles
William Perks Douglas de Fenzi was born in South Africa on 18 June
1863, the son(1) of John Douglas de Fenzi and Sarah (née Perks).
In 1889, he married the daughter of J. C. Berrange, a Solicitor of Cape
Town. They had three children together. •

Possibly a Norfolk police officer and others live in or near Kings Lynn,
Norfolk, England • Kathleen de Fenzi was the daughter of John
M. Douglas de Fenzi. She married Frank Wyamarus Cave-Browne-Cave, son of
Frank Wyamarus Cave-Browne-Cave and Annie Mabel Barrows, on 16 March

1. Anthonie Berrangé de Jonge was admitted as a
member of the Cape church community 21 December 1756. He married
Elizabeth Fleck, the sister of Rev. Christiaan Fleck of Cape Town. He
went on to become a merchant and prominent burgher. On 10 December 1782
he was appointed "kommissaris van Civiele en huwelijxzaken". On 17
December 1782 he gained permission of the governor to send his son,
Johannes Christoffel Berrangé, to Europe to be educated. A joint will
drawn on 25 March 1765 was lodged August 1796 MOOC 7/1/40.94 7/1/70.1-3
reflect a will drawn 11 January 1812 and two codicils dated 7 July 1815
2. Rev)Johannes Christoffel Berrangé b. 13 August 1769 d 11[13]
March 1827 MOOC 6/3 S (first) m Hester Alida Elizabeth VAN BOCHEM / VAN
BOCKOM. Rev Johannes Christoffel Berrangé, born Bloemendal, was
minister in Swellendam from December 1815 till June 1817, whereafter he
moved to Cape Town. The will of Hester Alida Elizabeth VAN BOCHEM / VAN
BOCKOM is the only source known of her full name. Their joint will was
dated 6 January 1806 and lodged 13 July 1819 MOOC 7/1/80.8

1829) Cornelia Eliana Serrurier died leaving an estate of £158/14/0
to her relatives by marriage, namely Coenraad Nelson, Daniel Fredrik
Nelson and Jan William Nelson MOOC 13/1/146 No.55. 1.1.1.4
During the second Synod in 1826, the Registrar of the NG Kerk, Rev JC
Berrangé, was instructed to take Synodal archival material into his care
and to compile a "redeneerd Register" or Synodal Repertory of the
proceedings. The Registrar of the Synod performed this role for many
years. In 1883 the Synod established a Church Office Commission with the
mandate to equip a proper church office. The same Synod authorised the
purchase of a safe for the archives of the Synod. One of the duties of
the commissioner was that he should take over the task of Archivist from
the Registrar. Rev. Johannes Christoffel Berrangé died leaving an estate
of 45961.10 rixdollars (or £3447/1/9¾) to his three daughters by his
first marriage to Hester Alida Elizabeth van Bockum. They were :

Berrangé; and Antonia Maria Berrangé married to Jan Hendrik Hofmeyer
Jnr. MOOC 13/1/52 No.36 The following note appears in the
Liquidation and Distribution Account : "the slave child Christiaan van
die Kaap belonging to the Estate, aged ten years, having been found to
be infected with a Leprosy, has been sent by order of the Burgher Senate
to the Institute called Hemel en Aarde situate(sic) in the district of
Caledon ……………………… shall be provided

Orange Street, Cape Town. Jan Christoffel Berrangé & Son of Burg Street,
Cape Town were well-known "Attornies, Notaries and Conveyancers". His
death notice is extremely confusing, listing grandchildren as minor
offspring together with his own live children MOOC 6/9/172.7626

6/9/71.3326, written and signed by J C Berrangé (her husband) lists 9
children alive at the time (denoted thus **).

6. Johannes Christoffel (John Christopher)
Berrangé b 20 March 1878 d 12 February 1916 MOOC 13/1/4351.37 m Flora
Gwendolyn Douglas-de-Fenzi. No offspring. John Christopher Berrangé
was an Attorney-at-law. He married in Pietermaritzburg and died at "Acadie",
High Level Rd. Sea Point MOOC 6/9/812.413, 13/1/3358.94, 13/1/4351.37.
His estate included "Middelfontein", division Mount Currie, East
Griqualand and was settled in 1921; however, there was still activity in
this regard in March 1977. MOOC 13/1/3081.227 contains a full, detailed,
insightful antenuptial contract signed 14 September 1911. His wife
applied for a licence to re-marry on 16 September 1931, the which was
granted.
Notes: 1.
An alternative biographical entry states: C W P Douglas de Fenzi was
born in Wiltshire, son of an Anglican minister, and was educated at
Bedford, a public school. In 1881, aged eighteen, he emigrated to Natal.
The Bedford school magazine extols is achievements in sporting and other
fields, so that bit is correct. 2. Emanuele
Fenzi (Firenze, 8 aprile 1784 – Firenze, 10 gennaio 1875) è stato un
banchiere, imprenditore e politico italiano. he was Senator of the Grand
Duchy of Tuscany and later of the Kingdom of Italy, Knight of the Sacred
Military Order of Saint Stephen, Pope and Martyr, Knight of the Order of
Saint Joseph.
