The Legacy of William Willes Douglas and the Evolution of Douglas
Road
Douglas Road, also known as PULAPOL and Jalan Douglas before
becoming part of Jalan Pahang, bears the name of a significant figure in
Malaya's colonial history—William Willes Douglas (1860 - 1922).
A Distinguished Career in Malaya William Willes Douglas commenced
his career in Malaya in 1878 as an Inspector in the Perak Armed Police.
Over the years, he held various important positions across the region.
In 1881, he became the Superintendent of Police and Prisons in Negeri
Sembilan, followed by his role as the Collector and Magistrate in Port
Dickson in 1891.
From 1895 to 1897, Douglas served as the
District Officer of Klang. He was later appointed as the Deputy
Commissioner of Police in Perak, where he played a pivotal role in the
first Durbar in Kuala Kangsar. In December 1909, he was promoted to
Commissioner of Police for the Federated Malay States (FMS), a position
he held until 1916.
An Advocate for Malay Police Officers
Douglas was known for his deep understanding of Malay police officers
and was highly regarded for always considering their interests. Besides
his administrative and law enforcement duties, he was also an avid
hunter who maintained a pack of thoroughbred hounds.
Retirement and Legacy After dedicating 38 years to public service,
Douglas retired to Johor and eventually passed away in Singapore. His
father, Captain Bloomfield Douglas, had also served the region as the
British Resident of Selangor from 1875 to 1882.
