The Legacy of William Willes Douglas and the Evolution of Douglas Road

Douglas Road, also known as PULAPOL and Jalan Douglas before becoming part of Jalan Pahang, bears the name of a significant figure in Malaya's colonial history—William Willes Douglas (1860 - 1922).

A Distinguished Career in Malaya
William Willes Douglas commenced his career in Malaya in 1878 as an Inspector in the Perak Armed Police. Over the years, he held various important positions across the region. In 1881, he became the Superintendent of Police and Prisons in Negeri Sembilan, followed by his role as the Collector and Magistrate in Port Dickson in 1891.

From 1895 to 1897, Douglas served as the District Officer of Klang. He was later appointed as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Perak, where he played a pivotal role in the first Durbar in Kuala Kangsar. In December 1909, he was promoted to Commissioner of Police for the Federated Malay States (FMS), a position he held until 1916.

An Advocate for Malay Police Officers
Douglas was known for his deep understanding of Malay police officers and was highly regarded for always considering their interests. Besides his administrative and law enforcement duties, he was also an avid hunter who maintained a pack of thoroughbred hounds.

After dedicating 38 years to public service, Douglas retired to Johor and eventually passed away in Singapore. His father, Captain Bloomfield Douglas, had also served the region as the British Resident of Selangor from 1875 to 1882.
