Born on 13 April 1912, Patrick Sholto Douglas was the second son of Hon. Archibald Roderick Sholto Douglas and Winona Constance de Maraisville Peake, a cadet branch of the Douglases descending from the Earls of Morton.

Commissioned into The Black Watch, he distinguished himself during the Second World War, being wounded in action, mentioned in despatches, and awarded the Military Cross and Bar for repeated gallantry.

On 22 February 1940 he married Maude Carol Hermione Orr, daughter of George Simpson Orr of Kilduff, and they had one daughter, Katharine Diana (b. 1942). The marriage ended in 1959, and in 1963 he married Alexa Granger Cameron.

Rising to the rank of Brigadier and later admitted to the Royal Company of Archers, he remained an exemplar of the Douglas military tradition until his death at Alton, Hampshire, on 16 June 1977.
