Sadly, the celeb
pages got lost! |
Maybe they will be
re-instated some other day? |
17th December 2005 |
I have noticed
several searches for celebrity details in this website, so have
decided to build a special website just for them. |
Celebrity
Family Trees should prove useful to those who want to see if they
are related to film stars, YV personalities, and other well known
people. |
16th December |
I have spent much
of the past week researching answers to inquiries not always related
to the Douglases, or only distantly. |
Work on our
descendancy from the Vikings proves interesting, whilst links to the
Buchanan family were of interest because of local connections. |
7th December |
Picking up on a
story in the news about Cunard, I have spent a bit of time researching
the Burns family, who built ships on the Clyde and operated
worldwide. That led on to research into Lord Napier's links to
the Douglases. |
See
John
Burns for the shipping news. |
21st November |
One reason it has
taken a bit of time to get the celebs site sorted out is that I have
also been doing some research on Nova Scotia links.
Alton Douglas has very kindly sent
me a copy of his biography. Looks like fun reading! |
Moseleys
and Tiltons
feature amongst the new entries. |
21st November |
Having added
several celebrity
family trees over the weeks, it occurred to me that I might be
better off putting them into a separate website. |
I have now
downloaded a new version of the software that this site runs on, and
set up my Celebrity family Trees website. It needs lots of work, so no
link yet. Patience! |
9th November |
Today, I have
completed a bit of the celebrity
section. No known Douglases here, just a bit of fun, but I hope
researchers will be able to make some connections. |
This week, I have
been working on Mick
Jagger, of the Rolling stones family history. With several
wives, partners and offspring, the celebrity section grew rather
faster than I anticipated! |
8th November |
It has been an
eventful time since my last update, with very brief spell in hospital
where I had minor heart surgery. And i am still here. |
I have used the
time for a variety of tidiing up tasks, and entering several
unconnected Douglases, whose names I have come across. Another
task has been to import details of several Canadian Douglases. |
25th October |
Anniversary of
both battle Agincourt and Balaclava |
And you can read
about who died at those events in my new report, People who died
today. But only if you read it today! also added is todays birthdays.
See Reports. |
24th October |
Douglas
of Whittinghame added to |
and all linked up
with Cavers and Friarshaw, plus interesting links to
Douglases
of Springwood Park |
22nd October |
Added Douglas
of Cavers |
linked to Douglas
of Friarshaw and Whittinghame. Still work to do here. |
22nd October |
Bit of revamping going on. |
New home page, and footerx. |
2nd October |
Decided to have a bit of fun,
and have started a 'Celebrity
of the week' page. |
First off, it is Sir
Patrick Moore.
Can anyone find a link to the Douglases? |
1st October |
For some time, I have been
trying to find ancestors of Deacon
William Douglas, from whom so many American Douglases are
dexcended. |
It would appear he is
descended from the 4th Earl of
Morton, on the wrong side of the blanket, so to speak! |
13 September |
I now have over 1000 Douglases
in the database, plus Douglasses, Douglas Hamiltons, etc. |
However, I reckon that there
are another 1000 in the biographical section. One day I will get them
all linked up! |
31st August. |
Another month gone!
The Douglas
Heritage store is open for business! |
I have added a store to the
website, selling goods with the Douglas crest. Much more to come
, as I find the time. |
24th August |
I have built a listing of all
the castles featured on the site - almost 60 in all, so far. |
See Castles |
22nd August |
Work continues on recording
ancestors of Patrick Douglas (see below). |
|
22nd August |
I have almost finished fixing
the bugs in the merged website, though the problem of merging the
search facility is likely to take a while yet. |
This means it is still
necessary to search using the boxes at the top of the page, and of
that fails, then the search box in the left margin. |
10th August |
Following a inquiry about the
difference between the Earls of Morton lineage and the Douglases of
Morton, I have started on the latter. |
A good start point is Patrick,
Baillie of Morton. |
10th August |
After a bit of a struggle, I
have fixed the name search facility. |
There remains the difficulty
of searching both sections of the website. Something to fix
another time. |
4th August |
No! I have not been idle
these past few weeks, although a short holiday did force a break. |
I have merged my two websites,
and given them a common theme. This will cause some confusion
until I iron out all the gremlins, but should, ultimately, prove
beneficial.
I have also, today, added links to a DNA testing
website. |
26th June |
This week, I have been
catching up on the castles section. |
Many thanks to Andrew
Spratt for granting permission to use his reconstructions. |
18th June |
In the past few days, unigue
hits on this website have increased from an average of around 32 to
over 100. |
No idea why this should be,
but it also co-incided with a glitch when the menus disappeared from
some of the pages. To those inconvenienced, 'sorry'. |
8th June |
I have transfered the Douglas
of Mains onto the new website, all 17 generations of them. |
So not much been done here, I
am sorry to say. |
22nd May |
No sooner had I got the new
website set up than a new version of the template comes out, so it has
been background work rather than family records that have been taking
up my time. |
Meanwhile, Amazon have changed
their ad sizes, so much corrective work is required. A long term task,
I suspect. |
10th May |
Work continues getting our sister
website up to speed. Although there are almost 60,000 names, few
are Douglases - yet. |
Here, I have added details of Douglases
in Switzerland, Germany and Sweden, as well as reporting links to
the late Prince Rainier of Monaco. |
8th April |
I have been working on a
sister website this past week, building a database of people.
Biographies and other historical stuff will remain here. |
The site is still being
developed, but you are welcome to come
on in and poke around a bit. |
27th March |
Happy Easter to
everyone!
I as surprised to discover I had uploaded 59 new files yesterday,
as I continue to build the section on castles. |
As I go along, there is always
something new to distract me, so work takes longer than anticipated. |
? |
Put in a little gizmo that
shows the distribution of Douglases in the USA. |
Map
of USA |
18th March |
I have been doing a bit of re-organisation
to include new images and details of castles associated with the
Douglases. This work is likely to continue for a bit yet. |
Thanks to Andrew
Spratt for allowing the Douglas Archives to use his painstaking
research in the collection. |
16th March |
Responding to an enquiry, I have uncovered
a fascinating tale of Douglases who settled in Sunderland after Culloden. |
See our
Forum
for details, and maybe you can contribute to the story? |
27th February |
Mostly a tidy up week, with some additions. |
Focused on Douglas
sports men and women. |
20th February |
Today's discovery was that Walter Douglas,
who died on the titanic, was part of the family that founded Quaker
Oats, and other Iowa companies. |
See Walter
Dopuglas and George Douglas for
further details.
Probably loads of you knew that already! |
19th February |
The engagement of Prince Charles and
Camilla Parker Bowles gave me a challenge. |
See how you
are connected! |
30th January 2005 |
Wondering what I had been doing for the
past month, I had a look at pages added or modified during January and
discovered, to my surprise, that just over 300 have been changed or
added in that time. |
One big bit of work was on the Dukes
of Hamilton. |
25th December 2004 |
A Christmas present! |
Welcome to www.douglas-archives.co.uk |
22nd December |
Been having problems making the 'On this
day' section work, so have reverted to a calendar format. |
Can anyone provide the script for an 'On
this day' facility? I am looking for a way to include daily changing
content. |
12th December |
This website now has over 1000 pages, and
so is taking more maintenance time. |
I have had to add a new counter as the
Bravenet facility cannot cope with the increasing number of visitors.
Uploads can take forever. Roll on Broadband. |
12th December |
I have re-ordered this page tp make the
most recent entry first. |
I hope this makes more sense! |
28th November |
This has been a period of tidying up, but
also of research. |
I am looking for help with Douglases
of Glenbervie and the Battles of Verneuil
and Steinkirk. |
15th November |
I have had fun tracing my links back to
King Robert II - there are several lines back down different families
all leading back to him. |
You can see some of these in my Royal
Connections pages. |
31st October |
How remiss of me! I have not been
recording recent updates. |
I have added a bit to the Earls
of Selkirk, but still lots to so.
The rulers, Kings and Queens of Scotland
are now being included, particularly where there is
inter-marriage.
Stephen Arnold Douglas
was an interesting man himself, but his ancestors also provide a rich
source of stories.
A new family added is the Douglases
of Friarshaw, but I have still to go back to before the Baronetcy.
Castle Douglas has its own page
now, together with a biography of the 'founder'. was there
really a 2nd Lord Douglas of Castle, in 1844?
We congratulate Denzil Douglas on
his re-election. |
30th September |
Over 30 biographies have been added and 10
updated in the past 3 days. |
But many have no family links. If you have
details to add to anything you see on the Douglas archives, please do contribute. |
20th September |
For those tracing their family history, I
have included a downloadable chart. |
Download
a template to help plan your family history |
10th September |
Yesterday was the anniversary of the Battle
of Flodden. |
I have not been entirely idle over the
summer, but the bits and pieces of work on the website have not really
merited comment. |
7th July |
We record the sad death of Eric
Douglas |
|
15th May 2004 |
I have been spending a little time
researching, mostly, 19th century authors. |
|
6th May 2004 |
I am attempting to add an 'On this day' section
onto the Home page |
It only appears when I have an entry for
that date, so there are still lots of gaps! |
2nd May 2004 |
This has been a tidy up week. I note we now
have 320 biographies, with family details of hundreds (thousands) of
others. |
Alphabetical
directories added. |
22nd April 2004 |
Several Douglases work for the BBC, and I
have put their CVs onto these pages |
Jill, Lesley,
Saba and Ed
all have BBC careers. |
19th April 2004 |
I have got a bit bogged down
with Douglas-Hamiltons recently, a branch of the family already well
documented from a family tree perspective. I could do with some
biographical details. |
Tonight, I have added three Douglases who
were awarded to Victoria Cross,
and one who got the George Cross. |
25th March 2004 |
Tonight's bit of research
found that 3 Douglases were on the Titanic. |
A full report on the Titanic
can be found in Encyclopedia
Titanica, a unique resource for anyone interested in the Titanic.
2457 summaries as well as detailed passenger and crew biographies are
listed. |
24th March 2004 |
Strolling down Princes
Street, in Edinburgh, I came a cross a park bench, and subsequent
research has turned up an interesting story about an 'Author and
patriot'. |
See Ronald
MacDonald Douglas, and read about his exploits in Ireland. |
20th March 2003 |
Back again after several
days of inactivity resulting from difficulties encountered after
installing WindowsXP.
Added several Douglases who had been politicians in
their own countries; Dominica, Barbados, Sweden and others. |
See politician
biographies |
8th March 2004 |
Much of the past week has
been spent researching the Dukes of
Hamilton, who since the third Duke, have been Douglases and
Douglas-Hamiltons. |
was interested to discover
that Saba and Dudu D_H are both
involved in television and wildlife, and the 14th
Duke (one of 4 brothers in the RAF) was the first to fly over Mt.
Everest. |
19th February 2003 |
Well! Got a surprise this
evening! Not only are there native Indians in Canada named
Douglas, but also a tribal chief in Africa. Clearly some more
research to be done on my part. |
See Chief Ngogo Obene George Douglas of Buguma |
11th February 03 |
Attending digital photography course on
Tuesday evenings, and have been given an assignment to collect
photographs of my ancestors to bring together into a family
tree. Strangely difficult for someone bringing together a
website on family history! |
|
9th February 03 |
Researching Douglases who are connected
with Africa, and came across a tale of daring do in Zanzibar involving
Arab slavers. |
Still to write up the story of Henry Hew
Douglas. |
8th February 03 |
Have taken a few days off to look at a
possible Christmas site for a charity. Now back, and it seems
appropriate to use a Sunday to add a section on Douglases who were
ministers of religion. Seems we had quite a varied contribution to
make, incl Lord Archibald Douglas,
who was responsible for the immigration into Canada of numerous
children. |
|
4th Feb 04 |
Got talking to a visitor at work today who
has recently been in Canada on holiday. Turned out she had been
to an Indian Reservation where she met a girl (with a tartan ribbon in
her hair), whose grandfather had been a Douglas, and she had retained
that surname. She also showed me a photograph she had taken of a
life-size wooden carving of an eagle, carved by someone called
Douglas. |
|
3rd Feb 04 |
I awoke this morning realising that I have
still not contacted people whose work I have included, but not yet
gained their permission. |
On the list for when my email is working
better and not being bombarded with viruses. Intercepted 52 last
night and around 75 tonight. |
2nd Feb 04 |
I stumbled across the Douglas
tribe of British Columbia. I think they like to be called 'First
Nation' rather than Canadian Indians, which is how I was brought up to
refer to them. Anyone help me out? |
Do they use the name Douglas as a family
name? I really am very ignorant about this! |
2nd Feb 04 |
Researching the Douglas tribe led me to Sir
James Douglas, Governor of British Columbia. I already had some
conflicting details, and have now added several more! A really
interesting guy, about whom I would like to know more. |
Can anyone help with successors? By
all accounts, there were several children. |
1st Feb 04 |
I have added some names to the military
biographies listing. |
Personal details not yet identified. |
1st Feb 04 |
I am having some difficulty in establishing
the history of the 13th Dragoons.
I think that they are now embodied as part of the Light Dragoons. |
Further details needed.
Links to Douglases serving and battles fought would be useful. |
1st Feb 04 |
I have decided that I ought to record my
jottings, and so, rather late on in setting up the website, here we
go! |
The Douglas Archives began their life in
July 2003. |
