That's another year at the Douglas Archives nearly over. Many pages have
been added and hundreds os 'cousins' have been included in the genealogy
records, all assisting family members who are searching for their
ancestors - and living cousins. |
Recent additions have been about the schooner, 'Black
Dougas' and 'Douglas
Wheels'.
We have the following records:
Douglas-Bate (7)
Douglas-Boswell
(1)
Douglas-Cooper (4)
Douglas-Green
(3)
Douglas-Hamilton
(108)
Douglas-Home
(23)
Douglas-Mann (8)

November 2007 |
My favourite genealogy software has been upgraded, but I have been
nervous about using it after earlier difficulties. I have been
testing it for some months, but all seems OK, so I have swapped back to
TNG. I hope you find it an improvement. |
As I write this, I am uploading a new GEDCOM which contains over
120,000 names. Meanwhile, updates have also been done in the History
section. Most recent has been contributions to the naval history
biographies. |
13th October 2007 |
I started a new job on the 2nd August, and a month later my son was
hospitalised following an accident. |
Not a lot of time for updates! |
1st August 2007 |
I have also been tracking down some Douglas lairdships and landholdings. |
The 9th Earl had most of his land taken from him.
See Andrew McCuloch's list. |
31st July 2007 |
Just back from a short break in Douglas country - Galloway. I took
time out to visit a number of Douglas places of interest, all details of
which will be added to the photo gallery, and into the main content. |
One visit was to the Douglas mausoleum, just outside
Castle Douglas. 24
descendants of Sir William Douglas are interred there - I wonder who
they all are? Another was to the Morton Cemetery in Thornhill, where
the results were disappointing. |
15th July 2007 |
Another jaunt - this time to
Bothwell Castle. |
Pictures are also in the
Photo album.
I also visited St Brides church, where the graveyard is in a
lamentable condition, butI did find an inscription to
Gilbert Douglas. The church was
locked, so I could not get in. I managed to stay out of the
Douglas Arms - too
early for me! |
14th July 2007 |
I took a little jaunt to Dollar Glen - just me and the dog. took
several photographs of Campbell Castle, and then, later a couple of
Menstrie Castle. |
Neither has any particular connection with the Douglases, but it was a
nice day out, and you can see them in the
Photo album. |
13th July 2007 |
Where have all the dates gone?
I 'lost' all dates, births, deaths, etc, from all records during a
recent update. |
I re-loaded the software, re-built the site , and hey presto, they are
back! Actually, it was not as simple as that, but they are back,
and that is what matters. Thanks to keith of Retrospect for his
help. |
10th July 2007 |
An interesting month, with more Douglases of Morton added, and some
background stuff on visitor analysis. I am trying to find time to
name everyone in the photo album, but I fear that will take some time. |
I am now using Google Analytics to monitor site visitors, as well as
the more visible Bravenet and Extreme Tracking. I have also
added a Google search facility to help researchers. |
5th June 2007 |
A make do and mend evening... |
Our search facility for the History section has been restored and an
advanced search facility added. 60 broken links are repaired. Yes,
50! Out of 1098 pages, that is not good, but it is not too bad either!
several links in this Sitelog still require to be corrected. I'll
get to them soon. |
4th June 2007 |
I came across a collection of obituaries from Corsicana. |
Not yet sure where that is (!), but I have added 10 new entries to the
biographies section, many with interesting family links. |
3rd June 2007 |
This has been the first opportunity to add data in a month - 30 new
entries for artists. |
It would be good to get more details. See
Artists |
1st June 2007 |
Following from the previous entry, I have had to re-design the website
in an atempt to rid us of the scourge of the hackers. One e-write was
hacked whilst I was still uploading the data! |
As a result, I have moved everything to a new domain. So here we are
at DouglasHistory.co.uk |
14th April 2007 |
Alarming news from Google! On the day I discovered two key pages had
been hijacked. |
Google reckon that there is Malware on some of my webpages. I am
investigating what this might be, but wonder if the Spampoison I added
recently is, in fact, the culprit. I have already spent time
today correcting a couple of pages that had been turned into links to
shopping websites. Who are these people? |
1st April 2007 |
My new Forum is being used by people who want to post unsavoury
messages, so I have had to take it down. |
Back to where we were! |
31 March 2007 |
I decided to bring all the lists together into one folder. |
It is conveniently called 'Lists'.
Help making sense of the contents would be good. |
24th March 2007 |
Another upload done. These take longer and longer as the database
grows. We have over 2,800 with the Douglas surname.
I have also been responding to an enquiry from someone seeking a list
of places to visit in Scotland. |
I have also been doing some work on my in-laws tree, and found an
interesting link from the Pollocks to the Douglases. Once again, these
leads to an annoying brick wall of
Robert Douglas and Marian St Clair. The are two
itineraries to follow in the Douglas
Archives. |
17th March 2007 |
I have been doing some interesting work on regiments commanded by Douglases - and have also added a new store selling books related to the
Douglas family, history and Scotland. |
All this means updating Douglas genealogy has taken a back seat -
again. See Regiments and
The Store |
9th March 2007 |
Douglases who were born, married or died on some of the Mediterranean
Islands have been added to the Archives. |
See Malta and
Ionian Islands' pages. |
4th March 2007 |
I stumbled across a few Roberts who were not included in the
biographical listing. |
They are now!
But who was the Robert Douglas who
was governor of St Lucia in 1816? Is there a connection with
Prime Minister Denzil Douglas? |
4th March 2007 |
The Douglas extra finger - do you have one? |
Please tell
us if you do. |
13th February 2007 |
I have decided it was time to build in a few links to my wife's side my
family tree. After all, they are important to the next generation
of Douglases. |
Sadly, adding several hundred names brings me no closer to tying them
in with my wife's family, nor with tracing her lineage any further
back. So on I must go.

12th February 2007 |
Responding to feedback from regular users, a new
Research Forum has ben
introduced to the Douglas Archives. This is where you can post your
queries, seek help with 'brick walls' or contribute to the development
of this resource for Douglas family researchers. |
Our
previous forum is still there - just hidden. It had received
hundreds (?thousands) of visits, but has annoying pop ups.we are still
loking for help with several of the lines of enquirey. |
10th February 2007 |
Phew! That
is all the names (108,625) back in again! One of those included is
Bonnie Annie Laurie. I was surprised to discover there are 25 others
named, or nichnamed,
Bonnie. |
The file size is now almost 50mbs, so this is not a quick exercise! |
8th February 2007 |
Back to research
on Gordon/Douglas links, as discussed in our
Forum. |
A have added a couple of
reports on
marriages between the families. |
7th February 2007 |
Another upload,
mostly of Galloway Gordons and Fergussons. |
But what has happened? I have 3,000 fewer names than before. |
28th January 2007 |
I have been
following up a couple of queries which have raised my interest. |
First, I am looking for a Margaret Douglas who married Campbell
Dalrymple, Governor of Guadeloupe and a relative of the Earl of Stair.
Second I am looking for Douglases who lived in Hunters Quay. What are
the connections between the Douglas place names and any Douglases who
lived in that area? Who was Wilhelmina Kay, who married a Douglas? |
17th January 2007 |
I have been busy
restoring some of the lost detail including descendants of
Baillie Patrick Douglas. |
Along the way, I have found links to American cousins. |
16th January 2007 |
It is the 300th
anniversary of the signing of the
Acts of Union between England and Scotland. |
I am looking for help in identifying Douglases who were involved. |
12th January 2007 |
Some kind friends
have provided further details of Australian members of the family. Some
of these replace some of my 'missing links' and some are new. |
We now have:
Douglas (2474) and
Douglass (339) |
7th January 2007 |
I found that
Hume Castle was missing from our
list of castles with a Douglas history. |
This led to the Battle of
Sauchieburn and Mary Queen of Scots,
both having strong Douglas links. |
7th January 2007 |
I have added a few
more Douglas families. |
We now have the following entries:
Douglas (2010)
Douglass (316)
Douglas-Bate (7)
Douglas-Boswell (1)
Douglas-Cooper (4)
Douglas-Hamilton (108)
Douglas-Home (23)
Douglas-Pennant (78)
Douglas-Riley (3)
Douglas-Young (1) |
1st January 2007 |
Happy New Year! |
