Oh dear! I
have run out of web space, and have finally had to, once more, upgrade
my storage limits. |
However, it means I can update the database, to which I have been
adding over the past few weeks, but been unable to publish.
Nothing dramatically new, just a bit here and a bit there. |
8th November 2006 |
I have just come
across the lovely story of Isabella
Douglas, who arrived in America penniless - and the fortune hunters
are still looking for her inheritance! |
We need to know who her parents were! |
8th November 2006 |
I have also been
adding European princesses by the score. But why, oh, why, have
all their titles been entered as a first name? |
This rather tenuous connection started with a Sheila Wenonah
Douglas-Young. Who was she? |
23rd October 2006 |
No! I have not
been idle since August, just neglectful of recording in this blog. |
There are now over 2,000 Douglas or Douglasses listed in the database,
with around another 1000 mentioned in the biographical section, and
yet to be added to the lists in the database. One of the losses I had
were Douglas-Hamiltons, so there is still a lot of work to do there
too. |
13th August 2006 |
100,000+ names!
I have just uploaded another batch, and now have a database of over 100k
names.
Wow! |
Many of the are from the Case family, and that is now the largest name
group. It makes my Douglas target even higher.
Ah, well. Something else to aim for. |
7th August 2006 |
It has been one of
those catch up and tidy up phases. But I have had time to add
another 1000 or so names, many of them Douglases.
There are now almost 73,000 names, but I still have a lot to do to fill
in Austrailian links. |
I have just acquired a book on the Regent
Morton, which has prompted me to update his page. That led
to a few links elsewhere, so now I have work to do to include details
of Dumbarton Castle and
Holyrood Palace. |

Well, that's me
back from holiday, and some time spent doing the family holiday photo
gallery to bore all our friends with.
www.blae.net/cyprus if you
are interested! |
However, the return to work (on the Douglas Archives) has also
achieved the restoration of the look and feel of the website, if not
yet all the content. As always, contributions are warmly welcomed. |
13th June 2006 |
Wow! That
month has just flown by. And it has been a busy month continuing
with the data restoration. There are still big gaps in the Douglas
names, but the Douglass list has grown well. I somehow managed to
import a Gedcom that had rather more Hodgins than I was expecting!
However, that gives me a target more Douglases. I have also been
adding to the biographical section, and updating (can you update
history?) the battles section. |
So, we still need more Douglas ancestral files to restore this
collection - possibly the largest on the web - of Douglas family
members. There are still lots of corrections to do on the imported
material. If you notice anything, then please do contribute.
Google, and others, is still pointing searchers to the old
database. Remember this has moved to
http://blae2.org.uk/genealogy/index.htm |
13th May 2006 |
So, 60,000 records
lost! However, several people have been very helpful, and I am now
back to 58,000+, but the missing names are the ones it was hardest to
collect and collate - and mostly Douglases! |
If anyone can help with a Gedcom or even a link to details that can be
copied over, I would be enormously grateful. I make my files on the
Douglases available to all those interested in researching the Douglas
family, and the number of hits from Google, and elsewhere, reflects
the usefulness of the Douglas Archives - or did til the database
failed! We no longer rank with Google. |
12th May 2006 |
Oh dear! It
has been a long time since I recorded what is happening in the Douglas
Archives. And it has been a momentous time. In March, I
inadvertently deleted the whole genealogy database, though the
historical elements and some of the biographies remain intact. |
My ISP (UK2) has been having problems supporting PHP - though they say
there is no problem. As a result, it has been difficult to
upload Gedcoms, and so I was maintaining the database on-line, rather
than on my hard drive. Uploading some new files, I just clicked the
wrong button - and away went over 60,000 records. The database is
now hosted by K1Z, and can be accessed at the new URL of
http://blae2.org.uk/genealogy/index.htm I have retained some
functionality on UK2 at
http://blae.net/douglas Hopefully, it will appear seamless! |

I
seem to have been under pressure from a number of contributors over
the past month, mostly pointing out errors! so, that's what I have
been doing - putting some of those to rights. However, there is
till some way to go.
I have also been under pressure to
get my dna tested, and have now paid my fee. I wonder if this is a
good thing? Who knows who i really might be? Scary stuff!
|
If anyone knows his family heritage, it
is Sir William Arbuthnot, and I seem to have got my single Arbuthnots
mixed up with my double Arbuthnotts.
There has been an interesting correspondence
about Barnewells and Barnwells. It would be good if I got this
sorted out as some of the lived in my village, and were amongst the
early pioneers of aircraft development.
Father Jack Douglas, C.P. has been
sharing the fruits of his research in Canada, and is currently, I
think in Australia. |

It
has been a rocky few days since my software decided that it was going
to throw a wobbly.

Apologies to those who have struggled

I
have just received an extract of a book of naval biographies by
O'Byrne enabling me to complete research outstanding for some time.
|
The
book was originally published in 1849, but has since been reprinted.
The edition I used was printed in 1990 by J B Hayward and Son.

With
Burns Night almost upon us, it seems appropriate to remind ourselves
of the Douglas links.

Dr
Patrick Douglas tried to persuade Burns to emigrate to Jamaica.

I
thought that I should have acatch up with some of our historical
ancestors, and also some well know current members of the family.

Brothers
James and John
Douglas figured in 18th century Britain. Melvyn
and his granddaughter Illeana are
actors (Both 'adopted family members!).
And a few others beside. |

I
have been experimenting with photo albums recently, looking for a
better way to display my collection. Not much luck finding
anything I really like.
However, I stumbled across Genebase yesterday,
and this not only has a photo album, but there is a Blog, and it is a
place to build family trees. |
My
page can be found here,
but the site is a bit clunky, so a certain amount of patience is
needed. They are still in Bets development.
I do not think the family tree section will
ever match TNG, used here.
Today, I have started to upgrade the website,
with some useful new bits and pieces, including improved Advanced
Search. |
15th January 2006 |
Wow! Over
250 visitors yesterday. |
hope
they all clicked a Google link? |
4th January 2006 |
I recently
stumbled across a website reporting progress towards finding the
ancestors of Allen Omega, and this led
me to follow up some work I started ages ago into Douglases who were
slaves, Douglases who were slave owners and Douglases involved in
preventing the slave trade. |

A good new year to
you al! |
I have just purchased
a new PC, partly because this website is now so large it needs
something bigger and better than I had before. This one could
power the NHS, so hopefully will cope - and produce better results
than they seem to be able to achieve! |
