On 13 May 1568, Mary, Queen of Scots was defeated at Langside Mary, Queen of Scots was defeated in her attempt to regain the throne from her son James VI and his supporters at the Battle of Langside, outside Glasgow. Mary's army, led by Archibald Campbell, Earl of Argyll, was defeated by a much smaller force led by her half-brother James Stewart, Earl of Moray and regent for James VI. First Fleet set sail for Botany Bay
In
1787, the 'First Fleet' headed by Arthur Phillip sets sails with 11 ships of convicts for Botany Bay, Australia. Australia's "First Fleet" was a group of 11 ships and about 1,400 people who established the first European settlements in Botany Bay and Sydney.

Birth of Charles Joseph de Douglas
In 1653, Charles Joseph de Douglas, K.S.L. was
born. A Captain in the Ecossais Regiment,
he was an adventurer who was involved in French colonization scheme in Canada and was taken prisoner after the battle of Culloden. He was appointed Governor of Saint-Claude in 1751.

Eilean Donan Castle captured
In 1719, under cover of a naval bombardment a landing party from Royal Navy warships Worcester and Enterprise attacked and captured Eilean Donan Castle and took the Spanish garrison prisoner during the Jacobite Rising of 1719.

1568 – Mary Queen of Scots is defeated at the Battle of Langside,
part of the civil war between Queen Mary and the supporters of
her son, James VI. 1654 – A Venetian fleet under Admiral Cort
Adeler breaks through a line of galleys and defeats the Turkish
navy. 1779 – War of the Bavarian Succession: Russian and
French mediators at the Congress of Teschen negotiate an end to
the war. In the agreement Austria receives the part of its
territory that was taken from it (the Innviertel). 1780 – The
Cumberland Compact is signed by leaders of the settlers in the
Cumberland River area of what would become the U.S. state of
Tennessee, providing for democratic government and a formal
system of justice. 1846 – Mexican–American War: The United
States declares war on the Federal Republic of Mexico following
a dispute over the American annexation of the Republic of Texas
and a Mexican military incursion. 1861 – American Civil War:
Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom issues a "proclamation of
neutrality" which recognizes the Confederacy as having
belligerent rights.
