  From Susan Johnston: "Philip was nine years old when he supposedly signed the Petition to Congress from the Connecticut Claimants" in November 1801.18 In all probability, his name was added to the signature to "pad" the petition. Philip Case never learned to read and write and as an adult, signed all documents with a mark.38 Philip was a farmer38 and like his parents, was a member of the Baptist church. Philip was named as one of the heirs to Aaron Case on the release to his brother Aaron and signed over his right to his father's estate with the exception of the thirty acres specifically devised to him under the terms of his father's will. Philip Case never married. He spent his entire life living in the households of others: his father, his brother-in-law Ansel Williams39 and his nephew Oliver Williams.37,38 The specified legacy in his father's will, specific terms for Philip's care made in Ansel Williams' deed of gift to his son Oliver, and his life-long dependency all indicate that Philip may have been mentally or physically disabled. However, the nature of this disability has not been determined. No estate proceeding for Philip Case have been found in the cited sources."
