  In the 1841 census,Gabriel is a clockmaker in Bothwell, Lanarkshire after being declared bankrupt as a Watchmaker and Jeweler in about 1857 and found his way to Melbourne, Australia by 1858 where he also was a Watchmaker and Jeweler. He teamed up with Mary Ann Ryan c1842 Geelong, Victoria by at least 1859 - they had their first child Eleanor/a on 25/1/1860 in Ballarat, Victoria. (Mary Ann Ryan's parents were Patrick Ryan c1812 Ireland and Bridget Gleeson c1821 Ireland) Gabriel Douglas and Mary Ann Ryan had 8 further children The three Watchmaking sons of Gabriel's - George Douglas 1862, Gabriel (Gilbert) Douglas 1869 and Robert William Arthur Douglas 1881 were the only 3 sons to reach adulthood.
