  Alexander II was the son of William I of Scotland (d.1214) and his wife, Ermengarde (d.1233). Born on 24 August 1198, he was William's only legitimate son and thus inherited the Scottish throne, on 5 December 1214, the day after his father's death. He had been knighted by King John of England in London on 8 March 1212. In 1221, he married his first wife, Joan (1210-38), eldest daughter of King John of England, though the marriage ended with Joan's death in 1238 and produced no children. In 1239, Alexander married Marie de Coucy of France (d.1284) and had by her his only son, Alexander, born in 1241, who became Alexander III of Scotland. He also had an illegitimate daughter, Margaret, who was married to Alan Durward. He died on 8 July 1249 on the island of Kerrara and was buried at Melrose Abbey. K.
