He was theeldest son of Joel and Sarah (Rice) Clore. His grandparents and hisparents emigrated together from Virginia to Kentucky prior to the lastwar with Great Britain. In the fall of 1828, Mr. Clore's parents cameto Indiana making the trip down the Ohio and up the Wabash in akeel-boat. Frederick Wineland and his family and some others were inthe party. They disembarked at Montezuma and the father of thissubject settled in Brown Township, Montgomery County. After aresidence of some thirteen years there he moved into Sugar Creek (nowHoward Township), Parke County. He was in the habit of flat boatingto New Orleans and while at Lake Providence, Louisiana, on one of histrips, he was taken sick and died in that place. Mr. Clore wasmarried September 13, 1849 to Miss Jane Deer, who was born in BrownTownship, Montgomery County, Indiana August 11, 1828. She was thedaughter of John and Margaret Deer. In 1850, they moved to thistownship, to his present farm where he had bought 160 acres. At thistime he owned 24 acres in Iowa; this he soon sold and began increasinghis homestead. More land became a necessity to him, as he had alreadyengaged in stock raising. he was very successful with hogs, from theproceeds of which he bought the most of his land. he now owns 560acres where he lives and 200 acres in Wayne Township, MontgomeryCounty the whole valued at $38, 000. It is in a high state ofcultivation, and on the homestead there have been put down 7 or 8miles of drain time. He has given, besides 80 acres to his marrieddaughter. Mr. Clore interested himself from the start in improvinghis stock and began patronizing the fairs with graded animals. Abouttwelve years ago he brought the first short horns to "Fountain StockFarm" (the name his home bears); these were bought in Kentucky. Hehas made two later purchases in that state and has also added threesuperb animals to his herd from Illinois. He now has 65 head of finethoroughbreds and has no lack of purchasers far and near. C. W. Eltzroth for Montgomery County,Indiana
In 1909, C.W. Eltzroth petitioned the Montgomery County Board ofCommissioners to begin a registry of Old Settlers. In his own words,"Ibelieve that such a book would not only be a source of gratificationto these pioneers, but of great value to their children and futuregenerations and would be a valuable book for reference in the matterof tracing ancestry and estates and obtaining statistics for futureuse."
