Robert Douglas was born in Allegheny county, Pa., in 1812, and came to
Jefferson county, Ohio with his father, Robert Douglas in 1814. He
worked at the potter trade with Ezekiel Cole and afterwards with his
brother, Thompson Douglas, at the gunsmith business. Clerked for James
Jones four years, ten years with Barrett and two years with Newlon, on
the corner where James E. Scott now keeps store. In 1874 Mr. Douglas set
up business for himself - general merchandising, in the town of
Richmond, under the name R. Douglas & Son, and still continues the
business. Mr. Douglas was married October 10, 1843, to Mary A. Read, and
by her had three children, named, Samuel, Mattie and Margaret J.
Douglas.
