Rev. Robert Douglas of Salwarpe and Hampton Lovett, born 25th
December 1765; died 6th December 1806 was the youngest son of Lt-General Archibald Douglas of Kirkton
(1707 – 8 November 1778), a Scottish Army officer and Member of
Parliament.
He was educated at Harrow, where he was head
boy aged 16.
His guardians purchased for him 8th March
1782 a commission as a Cornet in the 4th Royal Dragoons where he
served for four or five years.
Robert married, 15th December 1787,
Frances, daughter of Henry Vaughan Jeffreys of Worcester, who died
1796, leaving issue : — (a) Rev. Henry, Canon of Durham. (b) Robert
Archibald Douglas of High Park, Worcester, assumed in 1830 the name
of Gresley. Born 24th October 1794; died s.p. 13th February 1885.
Married, 1833, Rebecca Maria, daughter of Thomas Harvey of Belmont,
Herts., who died 1876.
After his marriage, he was at Benet's
College, Cambridge University where his brother, Rev. Philip was
master and from their took Holy Orders. His first appointment
was as Curate of Minchin Hampton, where his brother-in-law Hy.
Chas. Jeffreys was Rector, and later at knightwick and
Whitbourne.
In 1794, he was presented to the livings of
Salwarpe and Hampton Lovett by his father-in-law, Henry Vaughan
Jeffreys.
He inherited White Hall, his father's house in
Witham, which he sold to his brother, Judge William in 1796.
Besides enlarging the Rectory at Salwarpe, Robert built a
Rectory and Hampton Lovett for use by his curate.
