On 24 October 1328, the 1st Earl of Angus married

 John STEWART, 1st Earl of Angus married Margaret de ABERNETHY. She was the heiress of the Earl of Angus. He was a descendant of the 4th High Steward of Scotland of the Stewarts of Bonkyl. Their granddaughter, Margaret, would in her turn become the heiress of Angus. She had an affair with William Douglas, the 1st Earl of Douglas. Their child, George, would become the 1st Douglas Earl of Angus and the founder of the Red Douglases who would become the dominant family of nobles in in Scotland during the Tudor dynasty of England.

This is the coat of arms he adopted after he became Earl of Angus. It shows the arms of the Stewarts of Bonkyl (Notice the bend with the three buckles) quartered with the arms of Abernethy.
