Faughart

On 14th October 1318, The Battle of Faughart

Edward Bruce, Earl of Carrick and High King of Ireland was slain in the battle. Edward Bruce was the younger brother of King Robert the Bruce and was an heir to the Kingdom of Scotland if King Robert died before Edward did. The Edward Bruce campaign in Ireland came to an end with the battle of Faughart. Edward Bruce is reputedly buried in Faughart in a graveyard, a plaque and a simple grave mark the reputed resting place of the High King of Ireland. A few years ago an Edward Bruce trail was set up in historical locations in Scotland and Ireland to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the Bruces in Ireland campaign.
