The battle took place near Stirling Castle, where the English sought to relieve the siege. Robert strategically used the terrain, funneling attacks into his heavy infantry and anticavalry ditches. The encounter witnessed personal combat between Robert and an English knight, with Robert ultimately cleaving the knight's head with his battle axe.
