On 23 June 1314, The battle of Bannockburn beganDay one of the Battle of Bannockburn saw Robert the Bruce and his brother Edward Bruce stop Edward II's cavalry vanguard under the earls of Hereford and Gloucester (Bruce's canonical brother-in-law) from advancing to Stirling and relieving the siege of Stirling Castle. A flanking attempt by Robert Clifford and Henry Beaumont was also prevented from reaching Stirling by the Earl of Moray's division. Prior to the clash between the vanguard and Bruce's men, Henry de Bohun had spotted Bruce isolated in front of his men and charged. Bruce avoided de Bohun's lance and brought his axe down through the unfortunate knight's helmet with such a blow that the axe haft broke.
