The rifle is not Italian, but a Swiss army Milbank Amsler rifle, manufactured between 1867-1870, modified for civilian use and finely engraved with a dragon figure on one side (it is weird it looks like a doe in front but its has scales and reptile tail) and the family crest.

The Douglas Scotti crest lies below a crown with nine pearls, indicating the owner was a count.

I have not yet identified to whom the rifle belonged.  The serpent, or biscione, may indicate a Milanese family and is not associated with the Douglas family, so perhaps it is not one of ours?
