John Andrew Douglas-Hamilton, Lord Daer was born on 8 February 1978. He is the son of James Alexander Douglas-Hamilton, Baron Selkirk of Douglas and Hon. Priscilla Susan Buchan.

John Andrew Douglas-Hamilton, Lord Daer usually went by his middle name of Andrew.

He was styled as Master of Selkirk between 1978 and 2023, and styled as Lord Daer between 1978 and 2023.

He succeeded as the 12th Lord Daer and Shortcleuch [S., 1646] and as the 12th Earl of Selkirk [S., 1646] on 28 November 2023.
