Gustav Douglas was born on 23 May 1648, the son of Robert Douglas.

He entered military service first as a lieutenant in the Lifgard, but he had also listed as captain in 1671. He became a lieutenant colonel in 1676. In 1677 he became colonel and chief of Skåne Båhus dragoon regiment. Thereafter, Douglas commanded the Västerbotten och Lappmarkerna cavalry ( Sami ) until June 1692. He also became governor of Västerbotten before 27/12/1677.

Letters between Douglas and the "amtmanden" in Vardo, Hans Lilienskiold dated February and May 1695, are printed in O. A. Johnsen's book.

This is probably the same man who in 1691 wrote to Count A.J. De la Gardie regarding a converted Jewess who has stolen jewels worth several 1000 riksdaler and a request to send out a search party for her.

There is a portrait of Douglas in Fullerö, Västmanland, with copies in Gripsholm castle(1) and Riddarhuset.

He appears to have died on 24 July 1705 and was buried at Klara Kyrka four days later.  He was succeeded by his son, Gustav Otto Douglas.
