Monroe County Court Judge Frank P. Geraci Jr. gave 30-year-old Goldde Douglas the maximum sentence yesterday for an attack on Shawanda Davis in her Rochester apartment in January 2004.
Douglas was convicted of attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault.
Douglas, who has a history of violent crimes, denies attacking the 29-year-old Davis.
Prosecutors say Davis was attacked as she slept on a couch.
She awoke as Douglas was hitting her on the head with the blunt end of a hammer. Douglas then used the claw end to gouge her arms, abdomen and left thigh.
