The Rev. George Douglas was the 2nd son of Mr. Richard Douglas, 'a Gentleman who had retired with a competence from business as an Architect and Builder'(1),
who died at Winlaton at the age of 98.
He was a Wesleyan Preacher; Minister in Aberdeen, Brechin, Isle of Man, Carlisle and Dumfries.
Family
Rev George Douglas (b1769) married Mary, the daughter of an Aberdeen
brewer, George Mellis, in Aberdeen on 4th July 1799.
His son,
Dr
James Douglas (20 May 1800 - 14 Apr 1896) became a refugee and a
criminal who fled from the United States, the kind of man our current
refugee policies try hard to exclude. His crime was vandalizing fresh
graves, digging up the corpses and taking them home to dissect them. He
was 26 years old.
His great-grandson, James Douglas (1837-1918) was a mining engineer, metallurgist, industrialist, and the person for whom the town of Douglas, Arizona was named.
Notes: 1. Richard Douglas is otherwise described as
a 'Prosperous builder and landowner in Wincanton, near Newcastle, England'.
Should this read 'Winlaton'?
