Sheriff, 1965-71; a Chairman of Industrial Tribunals, 1966-78; QC, 1971; Counsel to Secretary of State for Scotland under Private Legislation Procedure (Scotland) Act 1936, 1969-1975, Senior Counsel under that Act 1975-2002; Member, Lothian Health Board, 1981-85; Member, Board, Leith Nautical College, 1981-84; Editor, Session Cases, seven volumes, 1976-82; Temporary Sheriff, 1990-99; President, Temporary Sheriffs' Association, 1998-99.
