Skirling is a parish, community council area and village in Peeblesshire in the Scottish Borders situated 2½ miles east of Biggar in Lanarkshire. Biggar Water, a tributary the River Tweed forms the southern boundary of the parish with the parish of Broughton, Glenholm and Kilbucho. It is also bounded by that parish on the east, namely the Broughton part of it. On the north it is bounded by the parish Kirkurd in Peeblesshire. Spittal Burn forms most of its western boundary with Lanarkshire.

 

Notes on members of the Douglas family with Skirling connections

 

•  William Douglas of Baads, died 1705. He married Joan, daughter of James Mason of Park of Blantyre.

Their sixth son, Rev. Alexander Douglas, was Minister of Skirling 1718, and of East Calder 1725. he died 8th September 1749, in thirty-second year of his ministry. He married, 22nd April 1726, Isabel, second daughter of Andrew Houston of Calderhall. She died 4th June 1775 (Scott's Fasti).
Mary Douglas, daughter of Rev. Alexander Douglas, minister of Skirling, married Rev. James Stoddart, and her descendant possessed Baads from 1873 till 1875.

 

•  Archibald Douglas (of Bonjedward) was the son of John Douglas, Burgess in Edinburgh. He was pres. (Preservation of James VI?) by James VI on 30 July,1574, when Linton and Newlands were under his care. He was removed to West Linton before July,1576, but returned in about 1585. He was refused Collation to Skirling on 20 June,1592. Archibald Douglas died by 19 April,1616

 

•  Sir John Douglas of Lothian b. after 1300 d. by 25 Jan 1350 m. Agnes Monfode widow of Sir John Monfode of Skirling b. ca 1315 in Scotland d. before August 1, 1377.

 

•  James, of Pumpherstoun 15 Nov. 171 1 „ James, eldest lawful son to the deceased Lieut. -Gen. James D., of Skirling 13 Jan. 1714 (Register of testaments)

 

•  Captain William, son to the deceased Lieutenant-General D., of Skirling 12 Aug. 1712 and 13 Jan. 1714) (Register of testaments)

 

•  Mrs. Margaret, daughter to the deceased Lieut.-Gen. James D., of Skirling 7 Sept. 171 5 „ Margaret, relict of John Lillie, cordiner in Bristo, par. of St. Cuthbert's 19 Feb. 1739  (Register of testaments)

WILL OF JAMES DOUGLAS.
1700, September 2nd. Testament Dative of James Douglas, eldest lawful son of the deceased Lieutenant James Douglas of Skirleing, who died in ... given up by Colonel George Hamiltoun, tutor to William and Mrs Margaret Douglas brother and sister german to the defunct and only Executors dative decerned to him. His Estate consists of a debt due to him by the deceased Robert Colvill writer in Edinburgh, of 4,000 merks, being the rents of the lands and barony of Skirling uplifted by the said Robert Colvill as his factor, and 520 due by Laurence Ord and William Oliphant merchants, with interest to the said deceased Lieutenant-General Douglas
designed in the Bond Colonel James Douglas, dated 14th August 1685, and registered in the Books of Council and Session 1st October 1685, amounting in all to 3,186 13s. 4<d. No division.
