Borg, or Borgue
Henry Douglas of Dalkeith and Borg (d. bef. 1456), son of Sir John Douglas
of Dalkeith, mar. Lady Margaret Douglas (d. bef. 3 Sep 1473), 1st dau.
of James [Douglas], 7th Earl of Douglas and 1st Earl of Avondale, by his
wife Lady Beatrix Sinclair, only dau. of Henry [Sinclair], 2nd Earl of
Orkney, and had issue:
1. Hugh Douglas of Borg, in 1474 renounced to his cousin the 1st Earl of
Morton all right to Dalkeith except where might belong to him as heir
male of the family. He married Margaret, daughter of James, 7th
Earl of Douglas.
2. James Douglas
3. John Douglas
4. Patrick Douglas of Corehead. His grand-nephew, Francis, was
retoured as his heir
Spital, now part of Gosford, including Red Spital, or part of Redhoufe,
was formerly a prebend of the collegiate church of Dunglas. Francis
Wilson, prebendary of Spital, granted to Douglas of Borg a charter of
Spital, to be held of him and his fuccesfors in that prebend for L. 22
Scots yearly. There is a confirmation of this charter by Pope Paul IV.
dated at St Peter’s at Rome, 5to Id. Martii, anno pontificatus fui
primo. It is obferved by Bishop Keith, that the Dominicans or Black
Friars had paid them out of the lands of Gosford 24 merks yearly, as
appears by a charter of March 28. 1474.
Hugh Douglas of Borg, second son of Hugh (above), married Christian
Seton.
In 1482, Hugh Douglas of Borg witnessed a charter. granted
by the fifth Earl of Angus.
Hugh Douglas of Borg married Mariot Cockburn, and had issue:
1. George Douglas of Corehead
2. Francis Douglas of Borg, and of Longniddry, married Agnes Lauder,
retoured heir of Patrick Douglas of Corehead, brother of his grandfather
(1)
3. David Douglas
4. Hugh Douglas 'in Longniddry', who married Marion Wilson.
Notes: 1. George,
of Longniddry, is possibly the son of this Francis, by Elizabeth
Fairlie.
Comment:
Extracted from Dubh Glasse newsletter of December 2016 (Volume 48,
Issue4)
Henry Douglas of Borg (third son of the James Douglas of
Morton and Dalkeith who married Princess Elizabeth Stewart,
daughter of King Robert II and Marjorie Bruce) married Margaret,
youngest daughter of James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas (and
sister of James, 9th Earl of Douglas and all the brothers who
were killed during or as a result of the battle of Arkinholm).
Once again we have a merging of the (matrilineal) ‘Black’
Douglas and Dalkeith/Morton lines. The couple had four sons:
Patrick (who must have died young), Hugh, James, and John.
According to Burke’s Peerage, in 1474 Henry Douglas of Borg
renounced all rights to Dalkeith to his cousin, 1st Earl of
Morton.
According to Stirnet, Henry’s son, Hugh Douglas of Borg
renounced the Earldom of Douglas in 1474 -- probably because his
uncle, James, 9th Earl, was still living.
After the death of James, 9th Earl of Douglas, in 1488, was the
offer of the earldom of Douglas renewed to Hugh or his brothers
or was the earldom declared extinct? Research into these three
has proved to be a dead end. Being Douglas and cousins of King
James II, did James II see the boys as another generation of
Douglas threats and eliminate this branch of the Douglas line to
safeguard his throne? Perhaps someone reading this will have the
answer. |
