He was given the name of Douglas Campbell at birth. On 23 June 1925 his name was legally changed to Douglas Douglas of Mains on inheriting estate from his uncle, Archibald Campbell Douglas of Mains.

He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.).

He gained the rank of Brigadier-General in the service of the Seaforth Highlanders.

 

Brig.-Gen. Douglas Campbell married Violet Averil Margaret Vivian, daughter of Colonel Henry Hussey Vivian, 1st Baron Swansea and Averil Beaumont, on 11 October 1899. He died on 17 June 1927.


They had three children:

  • Margaret Ella Douglas

  • Agnes Violet Averil Douglas b. 1901

  • Lt.-Col. Archibald Vivian Campbell Douglas (6 Nov 1902
  • - 28 October 1977) (21st and last Laird of Mains)

      Brig-Gen Douglas Campbell (died 1927) married 11 Oct 1899  VIOLET AVERIL MARGARET AGNES VIVIAN, born 3 Dec 1871; she died 30 Mar 1943 and left issue:
    • MARGARET ELLA DOUGLAS, married James Frederick Gault;
    • AGNES VIOLET AVERIL DOUGLAS, born 1901; married John Christie Stewart;
    • Lt-Col. ARCHIBALD VIVIAN CAMPBELL DOUGLAS, born 6 Nov 1902; married 1927 Elizabeth Cicely de Bunsen, daughter of Sir Maurice de Bunsen 1st Baronet and had issue:
    • JEAN VIOLET, married 5 Mar 1953 as his first wife David Hervey Erskine (born 5 Nov 1924; he married (2) 1985 Caroline Mary Lascelles; had issue by Jean Violet Douglas:
    • JANET CICELY ERSKINE, MBE, born 28 Dec 1955; married Gordon Drake Arthur (1) and had issue:
    • ISABEL JEAN;
    • ALLAN DOUGLAS;
    • MARGARET;
    • CATHERINE MARJORIE ERSKINE, born 20 Feb 1958; married Edward Georges Rossdale and had issue:
    • VENETIA VIOLA;
    • SOPHIE ELIZABETH;
    • CAROLINE GILLIAN;
    • MARY VIOLA ERSKINE, born 1962; married Edward Seymour Adams and had issue:
    • ELLEN CATHERINE JEAN;
    • MAXIMILIAN PHILIP ERSKINE;
    • ROSALIND ELIZABETH;
    • CATHERINE HILDA, born 20 Nov 1929; married Peter Assheton Joynson and had issue:
      • MICHAEL WILLIAM JOYNSON, married Juliet Carolyn Burges Pope;
      • THERESA CICELY JOYNSON;

    The Brigadier died on 17 June 1927. 

    A memorial to Brigadier General Douglas Campbell Douglas of Mains stands in New Kilpatrick Cemetery.


    Notes:
    1.  Janet and Gordon Arthur are directors of Mains Estates Ltd, a company registered in Leicester.  It is not clear if they manage land holdings in Leicstershire, or if there are residue lands in Dunbartonshire - the former Mains estates.
