Alexander 1st Earl of Home Alexander, 6th Lord Home, succeeded his father in the offices of sheriff Being a Roman Catholic he made his repentance in the new kirk on his knees before the Assembly in 1594, and was sent on a secret embassy to Rome 1599. He was one of the privy council of James VI. and accompanied him to England, where he was naturalized. He was created Earl of Home and Lord Dunglass in 1604, and died 1609. In 1611, John Carruthers, servant of Lord Sanquhair, was arraigned on a charge of the murder of two Lindsays, servants of Lord Herries, in the year 1596. He pleaded the extraordinary defence that he was included in a pardon granted by the King to the Earl of Home for the murder of Leonard Haitti in the year 1588; and also in another pardon granted to Alexander Earl of Home, Sir John Home of Hutton Hall, Samuel Home his brother, John Home of Kello, Robert Home in Hutton, Robert Home son of William Home of Ayton, William, Ninian, and Archibald Homes sons of the late William Home of
Carruthers, John Carruthers and divers others, for the murder of William Lauder Provost of Lauder, and for the burning of the tolbooth in that town, in He bought Hirsel, the present family seat, from Sir John Ker in 1611.
