Pvt. William Douglas, US civil war veteran.

William was born about 1819. In 1850 he was living in Alexandria, Jefferson, New York, United States. In 1855 he was living in E.D. 1-2, Alexandria, Jefferson, New York, United States. In 1860, he was living in Essex, Kankakee, Illinois, United States. He enlisted 14 Jan 1864 in the Union Army during the US Civil War, and officially mustered April 8, 1864. He was in Company D (Also Known as Quinby's Escort) of the 4th Regiment Illinois Cavalry as a Private, then with Company L of the 12th Regiment Illinois Cavalry when the 4th combined with it in June 14, 1865. He was mustered out of the army on May 29, 1866, but he was not present when the company he was part of mustered out because he was sick in a hospital.

In 1870, it appears he was still living in Essex, Illinois. Later in life he moved to Kansas with his wife following one of his daughters. According to his pension index card, he was living there on Nov. 6, 1878, when he first filed for his pension. He died on July 13, 1897, in Kansas.

He participated in the following actions:

Concordia July 25. Expedition from Natchez to Gillespie's Plantation August 4-6. Gillespie's Plantation August 5 (Detachment). Cross Bayou August 6. Bullitt's Bayou August 26. Consolidated to a Battalion of 5 companies October 14, 1864. Expedition from Natchez to Buck's Ferry and skirmishes September 21-26. Expedition from Natchez to Woodville October 4-11 (Detachment). Woodville October 5-6. Ordered to Memphis, Tenn., December. Grierson's Raid on Mobile and Ohio R. R. December 21, 1864, to January 15, 1865. Franklin Creek December 21-22. Verona December 25, 1864. Egypt Station December 28. Franklin January 2, 1865. Duty at Memphis till June. Expedition from Memphis to Marion, Ark., January 19-22. Expedition from Memphis into Northern Mississippi February 3-11. Expedition from Memphis to Brownsville, Miss., April 23-26. Consolidated with 12th Illinois Cavalry June 14, 1865.

Moved to Alexandria, La., June 15-22, thence marched to Hempstead, Texas, August 8-26. Duty in Eastern Texas till May, 1866. Mustered out May 29, 1866.
