Lands owned by Douglases in Galloway

Galloway (Scottish Gaelic: Gall-Ghเidhealaibh [ˈkal̪ˠaɣəl̪ˠu]; Scots: Gallowa; Latin: Gallovidia) is a region in southwestern Scotland comprising the historic counties of Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire. It is administered as part of the council area of Dumfries and Galloway.

A native or inhabitant of Galloway is called a Gallovidian. The region takes its name from the Gall-Gเidheil, or "stranger Gaels", a people of mixed Gaelic and Norse descent who seem to have settled here in the 10th century.

While Clan Douglas did acquire lands and castles in Galloway over the centuries, their origins are not directly tied to that region. Clan Douglas is primarily a Lowland clan, with their heartland traditionally being in Lanarkshire and Angus. Their name itself comes from the Gaelic for "black water" and is associated with lands near the River Douglas in Lanarkshire.

There's a strong possibility the family originated from a Flemish knight named Theobald le Fleming who received the Douglas lands in the early 12th century. His son became the first to take the Douglas surname.
Galloway connections came later. The Douglases, like many ambitious families, expanded their holdings. They built Threave Castle, which stands on an island in the River Dee near Castle Douglas, and other Galloway properties.

Notes:
•  When searching through records or gravestones in Scotland, it is common to find a person described either 'of', a place or 'in' a place or 'at' a place. These words are of considerable importance and are still in legal use in Scotland.  Read more>>>
