The origin of the Sri Lanka volunteer movement can be traced back to 1861. The Volunteer movement grew out of a civilian riffle club and was broad - based for infantry soldering by a proclamation issued by the Lieutenant Governor (Sir John Douglas KCMG) in the Govt Gazette of 01 Apr 1881 authorizing the formation of "The Ceylon Light Infantry Volunteers.

Kenneth Mackenzie-Douglas, Lieutenant 58th Regiment, who was born on the 14th of July, 1809, and died unmarried in Ceylon in 1830.


William Douglass (1831-1923) was a lighthouse builder who worked in Ceylon.


David Douglas Wemyss (1760–1839), army officer, went by the name of Douglas until about 1790, when he took the additional name of Wemyss, was in April 1803 appointed to the command of the forces in Ceylon. He returned home in 1806,




Francis Seymour Douglas Hamilton was born on 19 January 1811, the son of Augustus Barrington Price Anne Powell Douglas-Hamilton and Maria Catherine Hyde, in London.
Emma  Catherine Frances Coventry was born about 1811, the daughter of Thomas Darby Coventry and Harriet Wildman Hunter Esten, at Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire.
