Biography of Charles François Xavier, Comte de Douglas

Charles François Xavier, Comte de Douglas, belonged to
an old noble family of Scottish origin, dating back to the year 770.
His father, François Prosper, Baron de Douglas, commanded the
Languedoc regiment. He was sent to Canada in 1755 with his battalion and
married Charlotte de la Corne de Chapt there on April 12, 1757. Her
maternal grandfather was the governor of Montréal. His grandfather,
Charles Joseph, Comte de Montréal, and his great-uncle, Joseph Marie,
had accompanied Prince Edward to Scotland in 1755 and were taken
prisoner at the Battle of Culloden.
Military service:
Initially an officer in the Belzunce Dragoons. Militia command:
Elected commander of the cantonal militia on September 20, 1789.
Local government: Served on the General
Council of Ain under the Empire and the Restoration. Parliamentary
service: Elected deputy by the electoral college of the Ain department
on August 22, 1815, with 109 votes out of 203 voters and 292 registered.
He sat in the majority of the Chamber of Indignants and did not
serve in any other legislatures.
