Research by Lelie Dunn:

Sometime ago, I found two children with surname DOUGLAS both born at ALNWICK (described as cousins) in residence with my Grandfather (William PRINGLE 1841–1934 Master Confectioner at Shieldfield, Newcastle upon Tyne) and his family at the time of the 1891 Census. Now being in possession of the birth certificate of one of these Douglas children, I have been able to ascertain more detail of this DOUGLAS family, but I am not fully able to understand why they were described as ‘cousins’.

The children in question (Mary Isabel DOUGLAS bn 5.4.1881 and her brother John Malcolm c1883-1935) were the kin of ADAM DOUGLAS c1854-1935 and his wife Isabella JOWELL c1856 Sct., a farmer’s daughter. Adam was the eldest of a large family of 11 kin, his parents being WILLIAM DOUGLAS c1831 @ Embleton (a Master Tailor by trade) and Mary Ann WEIGHTMAN c1835 @Wooler. Both ADAM and his son JOHN MALCOLM were members of the legal profession and a business with the family name (Adam Douglas & Son Solicitors – founded 1894) still exists today at Market Place, Alnwick

Following the tragic death of John Malcolm (date not yet established), his widow joined their two daughters (Edith and Sheila) who had emigrated to what was then RHODESIA. She spent her remaining years there.

ADAM, as well as being in private practice, is also believed to have been a Clerk to the Justices (Bamburgh Ward I believe) and Clerk to Belford RDC at various times.
