he Battle of Piperdean (1436) was an engagement in the Scottish
Borders, fought between the Kingdom of Scotland and the Kingdom of England.
An English force led by George de Dunbar, 11th Earl of March and Henry Percy,
2nd Earl of Northumberland attempted to take the forfeited
Dunbar Castle,
back from
William Douglas, 2nd Earl of Angus who as Warden of the Scottish Marches had
invested the castle the previous summer. Percy and Dunbar came north with some
4000 men.
Angus did not want to undergo a siege, and decided to pre-empt the English by
attacking them en route. The English were surprised by the Scots, though
there was little loss of life, 1500 English prisoners were taken.
Comment:
The battle of Piperdean is, I think , wrongly ascribed to the land
south of Copath near Auldcambus. (Wikipedia also had this as the site)
but it does not fit the description of the battle which more likely took
place near Wark. There is a farm called Pressen which has a field called
Piperdean and the farmer seemed well aware that this was the site of a
battle There is a bastle house incorporated into the farm steading The
farmer at Auldcambus had no knowledge of any battle.
