  1. 1.  John Bruce Douglas was born in 1698 in Edinburgh, Scotland; died in 1761 in Barboursville, Orange County, Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

One source has him born Edinburgh, Scotland in 1700, and another 1698

I am upadting details to reflect recent information - March 2013

    Middle name may be 'Bruce'
came to Virginia about 1697 and settled in the Charlottesville/Barboursville, Virginia area?

First son born in 1732, in Virginia

John Douglas came over from Scotland and settled in Orange County where he lived and died. He married Judith Moorman. His son Achilles was born, February 22, 1752. John Douglas' will devises to his son, Achilles, 800 acres of land, part of which was known as Lynch's tract, also one-half the profits from a mill, certain personal property and a negro boy (Douglas Summers Brown, A History of Lynchburg's Pioneer Quakers and Their Meeting House (Lynchburg, VA: Warwick House Publishers, 1997), pg. 61.

From: Bristow-Douglass and allied families : the Rev. James Jackson Bristow and Sarah Douglas Bristow, their ancestors and their descendants, 1640-1961 by Julia J. Bristow:

John Douglass was kidnapped when a baby and brought to Virginia. The
exact date of his birt h is not known, but from circumstances i t seems he
wa s born about 1700 or a littl e earlier. He was born i n Scotland and was
i n line for an Earldom.
Who brought John to Virginia is not known, or where he first live d
    i n Virginia. There was a Douglass family i n Hew Kent Co., Va. i n I67O or
1689 and i t may be John live d there. He became a citize n of Spottslyvania
County and acquired land from a Mr. Curtis i n 1731? Later this land was
    i n Orange Co. ( 1731+)
Judith Moorman (daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Reynolds Moorman)
was a Quaker and married John Douglass about 1731? Their children's births
were registered i n Quaker records.
    When John1
died, his wil l was file d and probated i n Orange County
and from this wil l we have given the married names of his daughters.
John's sons live d i n Albemarle Co. (just across the Orange Co. line) and
from the "History of Albemarle Co." by Rev. Edgar Woods more information
    was gleaned.

Julia J. Bristow refers to the earlier geneartions as Douglass, with a double "ss"

    And then there is this:
John Douglas' "Will" devises to his son, Achilles, 800 acres of land, part of which was known as Lynch's tract, also 1/2 the profits from a mill, certain personal property and a Negro Boy. Achilles m Elizabeth Terrell d/o Micajah and Sarah Lynch Terrell in 1779. His father-in law was a QUAKER MINISTER. He moved to "MONTVIEW section of Campbell Co., VA where he resided the remainder of his life. He was named in the 1791 as one of the 2 trustees of South River Meeting. He bought and sold considerable land and was frequently a member of the grand jury and road commissioners, in whch capacity only a freeholder could act. In 1783 he freed all his slaves by manymission as the record in Rustburg bears witness. He further proved his devotion to the QUAKER SOCIETY by going with Joshua Brown, a minister to the South in 1778. While in SOUTH CAROLINA they were arrested and required to take the OATH OF ALLEGIANCE and give a BOND of 10,000 POUNDA before leaving the province. They!
refused to do this on the account of religions scruples and were held for 6 months in nominal custody and were finally released by an Act of the General Assembly.

There were Douglass families in New Kent County, Virginia
in 1670 or 1789. John Douglass became a citizen of Spottslyvania county and acquired land from a Mr. Curtis in 1731. Later this land was in Orange county, Virginia. (1734)
