  1. 1.  Dr. William Chisholm, M.D., Provost of Inverness was born on 14 Feb 1717 in Comar, Inverness-Shire, Scotland; died on 23 Mar 1807.

    Notes:

1 - The first marriage included COLIN, who was a very distinguished medical figure in the Caribbean. Two more daughters at least by second marriage.

2 - Provost William's disposition was drafted in 1794, though he didn't die until 1807. 1794 was the year of Colin's marriage, in Inverness. Unfortunately, at that date, the Inverness marriage records named only the couple and the minister. As far as I can tell - the first child of the provost's second marriage was born in 1777. If the marriage itself took place in 1775 that's pretty close to Colin's gazetting as an assistant surgeon. Katherine Baillie is explicit that she and Colin did not get on.

3 - I checked the two OPR births you referred to. Both entries describe William Chisolm as 'surgeon' which means he is, in fact, the eventual Provost. The second has an ampersand after his name, but the clerk stopped short of naming Janet Mackintosh. Neither indicates that any ceremony had taken place. It might be that the Treasurer's records would indicate whether mortcloths were hired, but for infant deaths it didn't often happen. You would expect there to have been a William somewhere, but so far, nothing to indicate one except Mackenzie. Not known for infallibility, either. But then neither is Burke.

4 - The involvement of the recently widowed Provost William Chisholm of Inverness with Alexander of Dochfour's sister, whom he married, caused deep offence to Chisholm's son, the later distinguished medical man, Colin Chisholm, who seems never to have forgiven her.

William married Catherine Baillie about 1775. Catherine (daughter of Hugh Baillie, 20th of Dochfour and Emilia Fraser) and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
