"Dobson's Original Scots Colonists....Supplement 1607-1707, c. 1998,indicates that "Hugh Campbell, son of Sir Hugh Campbell of Cessnock, former apprentice of Robert Baird, admitted as a merchant burgess andguildsbrother of Edinburgh 23.12.1674, emigrated to Bermuda 1677,returned to Scotland, imprisoned in Edinburgh Tolbooth, released4.8.1685, settled in Norfolk, Virginia 1688.[BS#28][ETR#370][EBR]
It is possible that he relates to Hugh and Robert Campbell (sr, d cir1778 & jr) of Augusta Co., VA, referred to with some details inChalkley's The Scotch-Irish, and to Janet (dau of Robert Campbell living20 Oct 1789) who in Oct 1789 married John McHaffie at Fincastle,Botetourt Co. Virginia.
McHaffies passed down story of ancestor banished from Scotland, and oneJohn McHaffie in Gargerie, Kirkcowan, WIG, Covenanter banished 17 Oct1684, Wigtown, was taken to Canongate prison, Edinburgh. The Reg. ofPrivy Council indicates McHaffie was sick, senseless, starving 16 Feb1685. !
Reportedly, one Campbell researcher has stated that Hugh of Norfolk, VA,does link to my Janet/Jenney Campbell."
