    "b. a twin of Eustacius, baptized, 1585.
    "The name of Rolfe is Danish and first occurs in history when Rolfe Krokewas King of Denmark. This special branch of the Rolfes are recorded asowners of Beachman Hall, County Norfolk, where they were living as farback as 1560. The first entry in the record is the marriage of EustaceRolfe to Jener (Joanna). These were the grandparents of John Rolfe. Therecord further states that John Rolfe, son of John Rolfe and and DorotheaMason was b. May 6, 1585. John Rolfe, Jr., was one of the prominentcharacters of his time, being the first Secretary of State and RecorderGeneral of Virginia, also a member of the Royal Council for the colony.Thomas Rolfe, the only child of John Rolfe, Jr., and Pocahontas Rebecca,b. 1615, in the colony--" (Some Prom.     "Note:
    died in the 1600's. m. "Jane Poythress"; left issue one child only, adau.
    Thomas Rolfe was taken charge of, soon after the death of hismother, byhis uncle Henry Rolfe, of London, where, and by whom, hewas brought up tomanhood. Shortly after he decided to return to VA,where he was born, anddid so in 1640. There is little doubt but thathe settled there on hispatrimonial property "Varina." near Henricopolis, sixteen miles belowRichmond. The historian Stith,described him as having been a man of"Fortune and Disticction in the colony."
    One incident in his life is recorded in Hening's Statute at Large,Vol. I,p. 327, we find (Act 2), after reciting that the"maintainening of thefforts, &c., are thought to be of greatconsequence, in point of honourand security of the colony, any yet oftoo great burthen of theinhabitants," it is "enacted that the saidfortes, with the propriety of acompetent quantity of land, be grantedto particular undertakers." &c.,and proceeds as follows: "And be itfurther enacted and granted that Left.Thomas Rolfe shall have andenjoy for himself and his heiress foreverffort James als Chickahominyfort, with foure hundred acres of landadjoyning to the same, with allhouses and edifices belonging to the saidforte, and all boats andammunition at present belonging to the saidffort; provided that thesaid Leift. Rolfe doe keepe and maintaine sixemen upon the placeduring the terme and time of three yeares, for whichtyme he, the said Leift. Rolfe, for himself and the said sixe men, areexempted from publique taxes.". More information can be found inPocahontas and Her Descendants."
