He was born at Rankeillour, and educated at Madras College, St Andrews. He then went into the army, but lost the sight of one eye at Gibraltar and was forced to retire. He then worked as an agent for the City of Glasgow Bank at Milnathort, and also farmed there. He was also a stockbroker, and a wine merchant in Leith. He married Anna Stirling of St Andrews. He later inherited the moveable estate of his cousin William Johnston of Lathrisk, a sum of nearly a million pounds; in 1890 he bought the estate of Balmungo near St Andrews and settled down to farm the 120 acres there. He wrote a book of reminiscences of his childhood home, called 'My early Scottish Home'.
He had no children and left his estate to various charities, to the Free Church, and to relatives of the Maitland, Makgill Crichton, Bayne Meldrum, Neish and Barns-Graham families.

(Research):Henry Maitland (1814-1902) came from an illustrious Fife family. His grandfather was Hon Frederick Maitland, 6th son of Charles, earl of Lauderdale, and was a nephew of Captain Frederick Lewis Maitland of Lindores, captain of the ship Bellerophon on which Napoleon surrendered. Henry was younger son of Charles Maitland, younger of Rankeillour, and his mother Mary was daughter of David Johnston of Lathrisk.
