"Jeremiah and Jane sailed from Liverpool on 01 January 1800 afterwaiting in that city until Mary was about a year old so she had abetter chance to survive the journey. Also, they crossed using thename Asbridge and only reverted back to Douglass after landing and ontheir way West. Sharon (Mills) sent me a copy of the hand writtenrecord of the marriage of Anna Asbridge and Willowboughy Douglass.[______ Douglas (form of name used most often now) connection wasMargaret, the daughter of Jane and Jeremiah. Her family had some ofJane's records. This record intrigued me because it was spelledDuglas and Willoughby looks like Willomby. Yes, I knew Jeremiah was in the War of 1812. He got a pension later.He lost an arm in the war.

The 17th Regiment of U.S. Infantry
History

In the tension existing before the Declaration of War in June 1812,Congress authorized the expansion of the army from 7 regular infantryregiments to 25. Recruiting was done by state, each regiment beingraised from a single state. The 17th was the second Kentucky regiment,the other being the 7th, raised in 1808.
Kentucky was part of the 8th Military district. The 17th was assignedto the Army of the Northwest, an ad hoc formation delegated the taskof liberating the Northwest Territories( including the states of Ohio,Indiana, and the Michigan and Illinois territories) from under Britishcontrol. The army's first commander, Gen. William Hull, surrenderedhis forces at Detroit on April 19, 1812, while the 17th regiment wasbeing recruited and organized at Georgetown, Kentucky by Col. SamuelWells.
The second commander of the Northwest Army, James Winchester. tookover and led an expeditionary force north along Hull's trail throughOhio toward Detroit. The command of the army was split betweenWinchester, in charge of the regular of Federal army, and WilliamHenry Harrison, the Governor of Indiana, commanding the militia.Harrison was also the favorite of Kentucky leaders, and eventuallyreplaced Winchester.
Upon learning of hostile Indians besieging Ft. Wayne, Harrisondetached a force of Militia and regulars, including some of the 17thinfantry. to it's relief. They were detached with Kentucky and Ohiomilitia to conduct retributory raids on Potawatomi villages on theElkhart river, burning crops and towns.
Winchester resumed command and continued the march toward Detroit upthe Maumee river from Ft. Wayne. Harrison however, received apresidential commission and resumed command of the Northwest Army. The17th, under Winchester forming the left flank of the advance, precededto Ft. Defiance, slowly moving toward the armys rendezvous point atthe rapids of the Maumee. Rations were short because of the poorroads. Winter clothing failed to arrive untill late in the year, andshoes were in short supply.
Eventually the supply base at the base of the rapids was establishedby late 1812, to be later known as Ft. Meigs. On January 16th 1813, acouncil of war at the rapids decided to advance to the River Raisin,to Frenchtown in the Michigan territory. Col. Wells dissented and the17th remained in camp. When the American Army chased out the Canadianmilitia and the Indians from Frenchtown, Col Wells was ordered toproceed there and arrived there on the 20th with part of his regiment.Encamped on the right wing of the army, with no defense works exceptfor a rail fence between them and the enemy, the 17th were in anexposed position. Col. Wells protested to Gen. Winchester on the 21st.They were ordered to stay. Ammunition was short, only about 10 roundsper man were available.

January 22 ,1813
On the morning of the 22nd, the British army, with the Canadianmilitia and the Indians. attacked. Under artillery fire, and snipingfrom the flanks by Indians, the 17th was forced to withdraw from theirposition on the north bank of the river Raisin, cross the frozen riverand try to reform on the south side. Eventually many broke and ran.Winchester was captured and surrendered his forces. On hearing of theBritish attack from the returning soldiers, Col. Wells advanced aforce northward from the Maumee to cover the retreat.
In the aftermath of the battle, the American Prisoners and woundedwere left behind in Frenchtown as the British crossed the frozen laketo Ft. Malden. Without restraint, the Indians began to kill thewounded and the prisoners. The River Raisin Massacre, as it was known,led to the later battle cry of Remember to Raisin.
Ft. Meigs
Jan.-July, 1813.
The American Army spent the next several months fortifying it'sposition on the Maumee, anticipating further British attacks. Theybuilt a picketed encampment, supported with blockhouses and artillerybatteries, and called it Fort Meigs, after the Ohio governor, ReturnMeigs.. Preparations began for the upcoming campaign season with thebuildup of supplies and a reorganization of the Northwest Army.
British control of Lake Erie ment that all supplies had to be routedthough Pittsburgh, down the Ohio river to Cincinnati and then by wagonoverland to Ft. Meigs. Overland travel west of Cleveland wasimpossible due to the swamps and danger of Indian raids.
The anticipated British attack begun in late April.1813 as advancedforces began to arrive on the North bank of the Maumee. Gun batterieswere positioned and firing began. The Americans sat behind theirprepared defences untill the construction of new batteries requiredsorties. Captains Bradford and Croghan's companies of the 17th werecited for distinguished valor by Gen. Harrison for their assault onthe British batteries firing on the American right flank. Capt. Holt'scompany of the 17th was also cited for service to the Americanartillery during the siege. The British withdrew, but returned againin July to make another siege attempt with even less success.
Ft. Stephenson, Ohio
July,1813
Turning from Ft. Meigs , at the urging of the Indians, the Britishforces moved the attack to Ft. Stephenson on the Sandusky river.Commanded by Major Croghan, newly promoted, and Lt. Shipp of the 17th,The fort was only lightly defended and had only one 6-pounder gun.Still, by judicious use of grapeshot and a lack of spirit among theBritish assault party, Croghan was able to defend his post. This,despite disobedience to orders to abandon the fort, made Croghan ahero and he was breveted to Lt. Colonel.
Niagara Campaign
Summer 1814
Following Perrys Victory on Lake Erie, the British retreated back toCanada and eventual defeat at the river Thames. The 17th was sent backto occupy Detroit with the bulk of the Northwest Army. With a reducedneed for men, Capt. Chunn's company of the 17th was detached withanother company of the 19th infantry for operations on the Niagarafrontier. Arriving in Buffalo, Chunn's company was assigned to thetraining camp at Flint Hill, commanded by Gen. Winfield Scott toprepare for the invasion of Canada. On their way there, they werediverted to a raid on Dover, Canada on May 14. There they wereemployed to burn food stores and public property.
The main invasion began on July 2nd with the attack and capture of Ft.Erie from the British. Assigned to Gen. Ripley's ,brigade, Capt.Chunn's company was attached to the 21st infantry along with Lt.Riddle's company of the 19th infantry. Together they were participantsin the battle of Lundy's Lane on July 25th, attacking the Britishcenter, taking the crest of the hill and the artillery positions.
Withdrawing to Ft. Erie, they remained for the siege of the fort bythe British. The remainder of the 17th arrived at Ft. Erie fromDetroit on October 6th onboard the Brig Niagara. Capt. Chunn was citedfor bravery and brevetted to Major for his defense of the Americanfortifications on Snake Hill during the British assault of August.
Following the abandonment of Ft. Erie by the Americans in the fall of1814, the 17th regiment was taken into winter quarters in Erie,Pennsylvania. They were here when the war ended in December. Theregiment was disbanded during the post-war reductions, and the remnantwas taken into the 3rd infantry.
Other Campaigns.
While in Detroit in the summer on 1814, a portion of the 17th wasdetached to an expedition conducted by the Navy and Army to recaptureFt. Mackinaw. While able to cut off supplies to the British on theupper Great Lakes, the campaign soon became hindered by the loss ofships to Canadian raiding parties. Trying to repeat the Britishlanding on Mackinaw Island also met with defeat. Jere REDENBAUGH, farmer, New Ross, was born in Jefferson County,Indiana, May 25, 1824. His father, Henry Redenbaugh, was born in Ohio,and his mother Mary (DOUGLAS) Redenbaugh, was born in England, nearLondon, and came to America in 1800 with her parents. They moved fromOhio to Jefferson County, Indiana, and in 1827 came to MontgomeryCounty, bringing three children: Alonzo J., Jere, and Mary. They livedthe first year in Scott township, in a house of the rudestdescription, boards being laid across the sleepers for their bedstead.Leaving Scott township they leased thirty acres for three years ofWilliam H. Lynn, in Union township. This they cleared, for which theyreceived $100 in money. With this little purse Mr. Redenbaughpurchased eighty acres of land in Scott township, upon which theylived till his death, which occurred in 1855. Mrs. Redenbaugh is stillliving in Boone County, Indiana, at the advanced age of eighty-oneyears. She is a member of the United Brethren Church. Mr. Redenbaugh'sfather and brother were under Harrison in the war of 1812, and hisbrother George is now a resident of Fountain County, Indiana, and iseighty-seven years old. Mr. Redenbaugh was a democrat all his life.
Jere REDENBAUGH, son of the above, has spent all his life on the farm.In 1847 he was married to Elizabeth CORN, daughter of William andSarah Corn, who came to Montgomery County in 1830, and settled inScott, then in Clarke township. There Mr. Corn died in 1859, and Mrs.Corn in 1874. Mrs. Redenbaugh was born in Kentucky. They have sixchildren: Williams, Sarah J., Eliza E., Nancy E., George W., andAndrew. After marrying, Mr. Redenbaugh leased a farm of Isaac EIston,in Union township, on which he lived five years. He then lived oneyear in Scott township. Remembering that a rolling stone gathers nomoss, he purchased forty acres, on which his present commodious housestands. He has been a thoroughly successful farmer, having added tothis forty acres till he now has the W. 1/2 of S.E. 1/4, and E. 1/2 ofS.E. 1/4 Sec. 28, and twenty acres, the E. 1/2 of S. W. 1/4 of S. W.1/4 Sec. 28. In 1868 he built his present residence, 18x36, with hall10x36, and kitchen 18x18, all brick; also large barn. He is now ineasy circumstances. He is democratic in politics, and a supporter ofprogressive movements.

JEREMIAH REDENBAUGH is a retired farmer, living just outside the citylimits of Crawfordsville, but he still retains possession of his farm,which is located in Walnut Township, Montgomery County. Mr. Redenbaughis a son of Henry B. Redenbaugh, one of the early settlers of thisportion of Indiana, who was born born January 2, 1800, near Redden,Ohio.
Frederick Redenbaugh, the grandfather of our subject, was a native ofGermany, came to this country some time during the last century, andfirst located in Pennsylvania, whence he moved to Ohio, and from thereto Indiana in the early days of the settlement of the state. Aftercoming here he first settled among the pioneers of Jefferson County,and then came to Montgomery County, where his life was closed at theadvanced age of' eighty-six years. He was a soldier under Gen.Harrison at the famous battle of Tippecanoe, and he served with theGeneral during the war of 1812. He married Margaret Haney inPennsylvania and they had twelve children, of whom their son William,who lives in Fountain County at the advanced age of eighty-one years,is the only survivor. The grandfather of our subject was an ardentDemocrat in his day, and was a leader in local politics.
Henry Redenbaugh was the fifth child born to his parents, and was ayoung man when he accompanied them to Jefferson County, this state. Hethere met and married Mary Douglas, daughter of Jeremiah and Jane(Huthert) Douglas. They had come from England to this country andfirst settled near Cincinnati, whence they afterwards removed toJefferson County, this state. After his marriage Henry Redenbaughremained awhile in Jefferson County, and then came to MontgomeryCounty in 1828. He took up eighty acres of government land, which hecleared and improved, and developed it into a fine farm, upon which heremained until his death, September, 1891, at the venerable age ofninety-one years. In dying he left behind him an honorable record asan active and useful pioneer, as a good citizen, and as a desirableneighbor. He was the father of twelve children, of whom the followinggrew to maturity and are still living: John, a painter, residing atNewton, Kans.; Jeremiah; Mary (Mrs. Brush), who lives in Iowa; SarahAnn, who lives in Boone County; William B., a resident ofCrawfordsville; Joe, a resident of Mace, and Eliza (Mrs. McMullen) aresident of Boone County.
Jeremiah Redenbaugh was born in Jefferson County, in the southern partof this state, May 25, 1824, and he was a child of three years whenhis parents brought him to their new home amid the pioneer scenes ofMontgomery County. He was reared in Scott Township, and has a distinctrecollection of the appearance of the country in all its wildness whenhe was a boy, and he can remember when Crawfordsville had but three orfour houses in it. He made his home with his father until he wastwenty-one, and then married established a home of his own with thehelp of his wife. She was Elizabeth Corn in her maiden days and adaughter of William Corn, of Clark Township, one of the early settlersof the county.
Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Redenbaugh, of whom five areliving: Sarah Jane, wife of Thomas N. Hosier; William, George W.,Eliza Ellen and Nancy Eddenfield. Mr. and Mrs. Hosier have one child,Viola Ellen, aged nine years. The names of the deceased children ofour subject are: Joseph Henry, Albert, Mary Alice, Andrew, Charlie andJohn, and one child who died in infancy unnamed. April 29, 1888,Jeremiah Redenbaugh had the misfortune to lose his wife, who hadwalked by his side for more than forty years, and to whoseencouragement, cheerful assistance and wise counsel he was greatlyindebted. Her age at the time of her death was sixty years, six monthsand twenty-seven days She left behind her a blessed memory as a wife,mother and friend.
Mr. Redenbaugh bought a piece of land in Walnut Township after hismarriage, and there he and his wife commenced keeping house together.He worked hard to improve it, and bought other land until his farmcomprised two hundred acres of most excellent farming land. In 1886 heretired from active business, and from the rental of his farm hederives a good income. His career as a farmer has placed him among thesubstantial citizens of the township, although he began life poor.This fact shows that beside being diligent, prudent and thrifty, healso carried on his work methodically, and was shrewd and far seeingin his management of his affairs. Politically he is a Democrat ofstanch principles. He belongs to the Montgomery County Horse ThiefDetective Association, and has always entered readily into any schemefor protecting the interests of the farmer.

Jackson Township Woman Died Sunday After Three Weeks? Illness.
The demise of Mrs. Mary Ann Swindler occurred at the home of herdaughter, Mrs. Howard Shelly, in Jackson Township at 4:40 o'clock a.m.Sunday. The deceased had been ill several years with paralysis. Shewas bed-fast three weeks.
She was born in Montgomery County, Indiana, February 10, 1837, and wastherefore aged at the time of her death, 81 years, 10 months and 12days.
The deceased was united in marriage in 1857 in Montgomery County, tothe late Robert Swindler, who died in 1879. Eight children survive;John H. Swindler, James Swindler, Mrs. Howard Shelly, Mrs. James Fink,Mrs. George Leeke and Rose Swindler, all of near Advance; Mrs. W.W.Yager, of Indianapolis; and William Swindler of Williamsburg,Virginia. Five children are dead. One sister, Louisa McMullen, of thiscity, survives.
Mrs. Swindler was a member of the Christian Church of Advance. She hadmade her home in Montgomery and Boone counties all of her life. Thefuneral services will be held from Ward Church at 10 o?clock a.m..Tuesday, the Rev. George Henry, of Advance, is officiating. Intermentat Old Union Cemetery.

SAMUEL DOUGLAS
Samuel Douglas, son of Jeremiah and Katherine Douglas, was born atMadison, Indiana, in 1827. If he had lived until the 21st of August,he would have been ninety years old. When a boy he lived with hisparents on homestead, six miles south of Crawfordsville, Indiana, andat the age of twenty-two, he was united in marriage to Hannah Surface,daughter of Rev. George and Elizabeth Surface. He bought a farmadjoining his father's place, where he lived and prospered for manyyears, rearing a family of seven children, namely, Thomas, Joseph,Lorena, Candance, Brily, Luther, and Maggie, four of whom, with theirmother, have preceded him. After the death of his wife he went toMontana, where he spent the remainder of his life, with the threesurviving children, Brily, Luther and Maggie. Three children,thirty-two grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and many otherrelatives and a host of friends are left to mourn the loss of thisgood man. At the age of twenty-one he was converted in a revivalmeeting held by the Reverends Samuel Zook and (Rev.) George Surface atOld Salem Church (Lutheran). At this meeting a wonderfuldemonstration of the Holy Spirit was manifest. Sinners fell on theirknees and cried for mercy. In Samuel Douglas' own words, "It was theold time religion." He united with this church, which was locatedfive miles south of Crawfordsville, Indiana, and was on theCrawfordsville circuit, upper Wabash conference, United Brethrenchurch. He has ever since been a member and faithful worker in theUnited Brethren Church. He has filled with credit every office of thechurch which could be filled by a lay man. He was a regular churchattendant and never tardy. During his prosperous years, he gavethousands of dollars to the support of the church. No duty was evertoo hard for him to perform cheerfully. He and his wife were faithfulChristian workers. Theirs was always the home for the preachers. Thefires never went out on their family altar. He died poor in thisworld's goods, but rich in the hope of eternal life. His life was asuccess. His influence for good was unbounded and can only bemeasured when the fragments of his noble Christian life shall begathered up; then he with the pure good of all ages will be permittedto take his place in that mansion our blessed Jesus went to prepare."Blessed are the dead, who died in the Lord." New Market, March 22, -- Samuel Douglas, of Carlyle, Mont., a formerresident of Crawfordsville, died last Sunday at the home of hisbrother, Briley Douglas, of that place. His body is expected toarrive at New Market some time Friday night at the home of hisgrandson, David Douglas. The funeral will be held Saturday morning atthe Otterbein Church with burial at Surface Cemetery. Mr. Douglas atthe time of his death was ninety years old and is survived by twobrothers, Briley and Luther Douglas and one sister, Mrs. MaggieKelsey, all of Carlyle, Mont., and several nieces and nephews at NewMarket." Jeremiah Douglas was born in Montgomery County, IN., May 28, 1832, thethird of the ten children of Jeremiah Douglas, a basket maker, andMary Catherine (Redenbaugh) Douglas. His grandfather, also namedJeremiah Douglas, lost an arm in the War of 1812. the family had cometo the area in the early years of Montgomery County from Scotland viaHinton, KY and Madison, IN. Jeremiah married Martha Jane Mitchell, inMontgomery County on Mar. 11, 1856. They were James Lewis Douglas (B.1857 - D. 1889) who married his cousin, Levina Catherine Douglas,Amanda Jane Douglas, who died unmarried at age 20 in 1878, Mary HannaDouglas (B. 1864 - D. 1953) who became wife of George Washington Burk,and Mariah Louella Douglas (B. 1872 - D. 1914) who married John J.Cox.
Jeremiah was a farmer well-known in early Montgomery County. Like hisfather he owned land a mile and a half east of Whitesville. This landwas sold in 1873, when Jeremiah, his wife, children, and parentsrelocated northwest of New Market. He passed away on June 28, 1907,at the age of 75 of stomach trouble and heart disease after havingbeen confined to his bed for six weeks prior to his death.
We get an interesting insight into the family history from a line inhis obituary. It reads, "For years the deceased lived in the hopethat he would share in a large fortune which was coming to the Douglasfamily from Scotland." No doubt this referred to the family legendthat Jeremiah's great-grandfather Douglas had been murdered the nighthe was to take over his inheritance...a family estate in Scotland.
Martha Jane's death came on Feb. 10, 1914. Interestingly, herdaughter, Mariah "Louella," who was living at the same home at thetime, died the very next day at the age of 42. IN THE BEGINNING. . .

The autumn of 1860 was a time of ominous rumors and expectations. Thepresidential election was held on November 6th in an atmosphere ofcrisis. In Springfield, Illinois, Abraham Lincoln was sipping coffeeand eating sandwiches that were made by the "ladies of Springfield."He waited patiently as the telegraph brought in the returns. By 1o'clock in the morning on November 7th, victory was certain. Writingin his diary, "I went home, but not to get much sleep, for I thenfelt, as I never had before, the responsibility that was upon me."
Lincoln's feelings were with good cause, for he and the rest of thecountry were about to face the most serious crisis since the foundingof the Republic. Winning an unusual four-party election with only 40%of the vote, he received 180 of the 301 electoral votes. FellowIllinois politician, Steven A. Douglas, received 29% of the vote, butonly 12 electoral votes, placing him last of the four candidates.(More information on 1850 and 1860 politics can be found on the oneyear regiment's pages under MUSTER IN)
One Year Regiment

For new Soldiers, the typical day began with reveille at dawn. Thesleepy eyed recruits filed into company 'streets' for the FirstSergeant's roll call, and then marched off to breakfast. Afterbreakfast, the regiment's duty medical officer would perform sick callon all those stating illness. Those medically cleared or in otherwisegood health went to drill for two to three hours, which preceded thenoon meal.

Afternoons usually meant another three hour period of drill, followedby a brief period of rest. This time was usually spent cleaning andpolishing uniform and issued items before the regiment reassembled forinspection. If time permitted, dress parades were performed and thenit was time for the evening meal. Soon afterward, "lights out" wassounded and most of the men were asleep by 9:30 pm.
The challenge of converting the independent-minded citizen into a welldrilled Soldier was occasionally the undoing of many commanders.During periods of drill, an awkward officer was usually deemedlaughable by subordinates, seniors and peers alike; the officer wouldusually substitute the proper commands for chaotic or franticinstructions, which would confuse even the most intelligent citizenSoldier. It did not help that several of the new officers were eitherpolitical appointees with limited qualifications, those who were luckyenough that they were elected first, or others were just less willingto take the responsibility.
There were those like 2nd Lieutenant Benjamin F. Davis, Company F,54th Indiana (1 year regiment); the scathing endorsement he receivedon his resignation letter says a lot for his ability as an officer:"2nd Lt Benjamin F. Davis is, and has been in every way, disqualifiedto have charge of a company of men. He is exceedingly ignorant ofmilitary tactics. I would therefore respectfully recommend that hisresignation be accepted. Signed Col F. Mansfield, 54th Ind." TheBrigade Commander, Brigadier General John Osterhaus added, "Stronglyrecommended. There is vast room for improvement in the offering ofthis Regiment."
Appealing almost exclusively to the northern states in a blatantlysectional campaign, Lincoln defeated his three opponents by carryingevery free state except New Jersey. Of the candidates, only Douglasactively campaigned in every section of the union.
Stephen Douglas's appeal, especially in the closing days of thecampaign, was on behalf of the Union. He feared - correctly - that thecountry was in imminent danger of splitting apart. While mostAmericans sensed the mood of crisis that fall, another Douglass,Frederick Douglass, greeted the election of Abraham Lincoln with hischaracteristic optimism. He saw it as an opportunity to educateAmericans on their moral and political duties and responsibilities.
Most northerners resented all the furor over slavery, while thesouthern economy heavily depended on it. In his drive to the WhiteHouse, Lincoln had expressed a desire to keep southern states fromseceding, even to the point of not changing slavery in states where italready existed, including the District of Columbia. Other candidatespromised to enforce the hated Fugitive Slave Act, and put down slaverebellions if they were elected president. In the end, it would all bein vain.
The news of the attack on Fort Sumter galvanized the north. RobertStiles, a young southerner at Columbia University later recalled theuproar in New York City: "A wild enthusiasm for 'the flag' seized andswept the entire population, which surged through the streets hungwith banners and bunting, their own persons bedecked with small UnitedStates flags and other patriotic devices." Until early 1862, thestates were responsible for recruiting regiments and providing alltheir supplies. This included the national and regimental flags thatwere carried into battle.
Most of the volunteers who amassed for the Union cause joined militaryunits that were sponsored by their home states. While the federalgovernment in Washington increased the size of the Regular Army, theyattempted raise a number of units that transcended state borders. Butin the end, it relied upon the loyal states to provide troops withnumbers set by a quota system. This was largely due to states payingbounties for volunteers; the states reasoned that men would enlist forpay instead of being drafted.

On October 7, the Federal armyof Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell, numbering nearly 55,000, converged onthe small crossroads town of Perryville, Kentucky, in three columns.Union forces first skirmished with Rebel cavalry on the SpringfieldPike before the fighting became more general, on Peters Hill, as thegrayclad infantry arrived. The next day, at dawn, fighting began againaround Peters Hill as a Union division advanced up the pike, haltingjust before the Confederate line. The fighting then stopped for atime. After noon, a Confederate division struck the Union left flankand forced it to fall back. When more Confederate divisions joined thefray, the Union line made a stubborn stand, counterattacked, butfinally fell back with some troops routed. Buell did not know of thehappenings on the field, or he would have sent forward some reserves.Even so, the Union troops on the left flank, reinforced by twobrigades, stabilized their line, and the Rebel attack sputtered to ahalt. Later, a Rebel brigade assaulted the Union division on theSpringfield Pike but was repulsed and fell back into Perryville. TheYankees pursued, and skirmishing occurred in the streets in theevening before dark. Union reinforcements were threatening the Rebelleft flank by now. Bragg, short of men and supplies, withdrew duringthe night, and, after pausing at Harrodsburg, continued theConfederate retrograde by way of Cumberland Gap into East Tennessee.The Confederate offensive was over, and the Union controlled Kentucky.

grandchildren to miss their grandmother's love. Two sisters and two
brothers survive. Mrs. Sarah Hosier of this city, William Redenbaughand

and a host of other relatives of this county and she will be missed byher
many friends which was number by all who knew her. Over 3 years agoshe
began to lose her sight and for over two years had been blind. Herhealth
failed with her sight but she was only sick three days before death.In the

Mr. Swindler wasborn in Montgomery County and came with his parents to Boone Countywhen 11 years old. He was married Nov 19, 1882 in Boone Co to EllaKinnear who survives. He resided on a farm until 11 when he moved toLebanon. Mr. Swindler was a member of the Central Christian Church.Surviving besides the wife are five children: Cora, Lona and OrphaSwindler, all teachers in the South Bend schools, Robert E. Swindlerof Charlottesville, Va and James A. Swindler of New Wilmington PA; twobrothers, William and James C. both of near Advance and 5 sisters,Mrs. Howard Shelly; Mrs. James Fink and Miss Rosa Swindler of nearAdvance; Mrs. George Leek of Jamestown and Mrs. Wallace Yeager ofLadoga. ORA RUSSELL SWINDLER

Ora Russell Swindler, son of James and America Swindler, died at nineo?clock, the night of February 23, 1923, at his home two miles east ofAdvance. He had been ill for three weeks, with a complication ofdiseases.

Mr. Swindler was born in Boone County, Indiana, October 23, 1899, andwas at the time of his death 23 years and four months of age. He wasmarried August 12, 1916, in Lebanon, to Mabel Ann Palmer, whosurvives. Other relatives surviving include the widow, the parents,one child, Rosa Anna Swindler, and two brothers, Henry H., of JacksonTownship, and Roy C., of Danville.

Mr. Swindler has been a resident of Boone County all his life. He wasa member of the North Christian Church, at Advance, from which thefuneral was conducted at 2 o?clock Sunday afternoon, by Rev. GeorgeWyatt. Interment at Old Union Cemetery.

Owing to the fact that people of the country have been flockin g insuch

great numbers to the cities during

the past decade the time has co me when our urban and rural populationis

nearly equal. Political economists , sociologists, politicians, and

others are becoming alarmed at this, contend ing, among other things,that

there are too many people to eat and too few pr oducing things to be

eaten. They warn us that our rich, virgin soils are fas t becomingthings

of the past and we cannot abandon the depleted farms as we cast off a

worn-out garment and seek a new one. We have to stay in the occu pied

territory. Our grazing lands and timbered lands have been subdivided;w e

no more have the free fields; our great West is occupied by settlers.

Bui ld up the neglected soil, they urge us, so that it will produceenough

food f or all the people. One of the citizens of Boone County, who has

been wise en ough to remain on the farm and to so scientifically tillhis

soil, that it ha s been strengthened rather than depletted, is WilliamU.

Lane, of Jackson Tow nship.

Mr. Lane, was born in Center Township, Boone County, December 9, 1864,

He is a son of Emsley J. and Isabell M. (McConaughy) Lane, the formera

nat ive of Putnam County, and the latter of Boone County. The paternal

grandpare nts were, Lewis and Emma (Jackson) Lane. Lewis Lane came to

Indiana from Kno xville, Tennessee, about 1830, marrying in PutnamCounty

and settling on a fa rm three and one-half miles southwest of Lebanon,

about 1840, establishing th e future home of the family. The maternal

grandparents, Harvey, and Polly (J amison) McConaughy, were among the

first white settlers in Boone County, clea ring and developing a farm

here. In this locality, the paents of our subjec t grew up and were

educated in the early-day schools, and after their marriag e theysettled

on a farm in Center Township, Mr. Lane owning a farm here, but later,

after the death of his father, the family removed to Jackson Township.

The death of Emsley Lane occurred in 1872. Her death occurred in

Lebano n in 1901, at an advanced age. To these parents, the following

children were born; Dora A., now deceased, was the wife of HenryYeley;

Viola, is the wife of Enoch Marks, of Indianapolis; Miranda A., is the

wife of J.W. Jones, of Lebanon; Clara, is the wife of Perry Canada, of

Jackson Township; Oliver M. lives in LaFayette, Indiana; William U.,of

this sketch; Alma J. is the wi fe of William Fall, of Washington

Township, this county.

William U. Lane, gr ew up on the home farm and he received hiseducation

in the district schools, the Central Normal at Danville and the State

Normal at Terre Haute. When fi fteen years old, he left home andworked

by the month at farm work in his nat ive county. When twenty years oldhe

went to Cimarron, Gray County, Kansas, where he remained from 1885 to

1888. He homesteaded a Government claim, near Dodge City. Returning to

Boone County, he taught school, from the Winter of 1888, continuously

until 1911. He remained a close student and kept well ab reast of the

times of all that pertained to his vocation. In, 1892, he was e lected

County Surveyor, the duties of which office he filled with ability, and

satisfaction, until 1905. In 1892, he purchased a farm in Harrison and

l ater in Center Township. He now owns ninety-two acres of fine landin

Jackso n Township. He disposed of his other land in 1900. He hasengaged

in farmin g, all the while, with the exception of two years when hewas

County Surveyor . He has been very sucessful, as a general farmer, and

stock raiser, and he has an attractive home and good outbuildings.

Mr. Lane, was married in Septemb er 1892, to Myrtle Swindler, who was

born in Jackson Township, where she was reared and educated.

A terrible accident occurred last Thursday night at about 8 o?clockwhen Briley Douglas, of near
Carlyle one of the pioneer, farmers of Eastern Montana, had his skullcrushed in and brains
dashed out when his Ford car driven by his son, Fred, struck the backend of a load of lumber at
a sharp hill one and a half miles north of Carlyle, resulting in hisdeath three hours later.
Mr. Douglas, his son, Fred and Dillard Carlock, who had been doingjury service at this city during
the previous several days, were returning home for the night lastThursday and had reached a
point half way to their destination when the electric lights on thecar burned out. They succeeded
in securing a lantern and strapping it to the front end of theautomobile, let off Mr. Carlock at his
home, and were proceeding with this dim light when the accidentoccurred.
Unobserved by the Douglas?s, a double-box wagon with lumber piled init and long 2x6?s
extending out over and behind the box, was ahead of them when a sharphill a mile and a half
north of Carlyle was reached. It is stated that Fred made the hill onlow gear, and not seeing the
vehicle ahead shifted the machine to high. They had proceeded butthree rods down hill,
however, when they smashed into the rear of the wagon and the shocksent the back end of the
light automobile up against the butt ends of long timbers. The elderMr. Douglas being in the rear
seat, he received the full effects of the collision. When picked uphis skull was crushed in, his left eye was knocked out and the brainswere oozing out.
Aid was secured of John Hartse and Mr. Douglas was taken home in theHartse car. Briley
Douglas died at 11 o?clock that night without regaining consciousness.
Mr. Douglas, who was a man 58 years of age, is survived by his widow,Minnie R. Douglas, five
children, a sister and a brother. They are: Fred, Ottie, Howard,Grace, and Ruby. Douglas and
Mrs. Maggie Kelsey of Carlyle.
Deceased moved to the Golden Valley in 1906, his family following himin the spring of 1907. He
had conducted his farm located about four miles northwest of Carlyleever since coming here,
and was interested in the Beach Co-Operative Mercantile company, beingone of its directors.
The funeral was held from the UB church at Carlyle last Sunday noonand interment in the Carlyle
cemetery.
The entire community sympathizes with the bereaved family in thesudden loss of a devoted

"Mary Hanna (Douglass) Burk was born on the dirt floor of her parentslog cabin home in the area of Whitesville, Montgomery County, Indiana. Stories passed down paint a classic picture of an uneducated, hardworking, and warm hearted product of the 19th Century.
Following the death of her husband .... She could often be foundtending her garden at home, barefooted and in long sleeves and bonnetto prevent sunburn. She had a knack for children. A crying babywould stop fussing almost immediately in Mary Hanna's caring arms.Her arm was loaded with antiques, including a pump organ and an oldVictrola crank type record player.
In her old age, she wore false teeth, which she abhorred, and took outwhenever she ate! She was fond of sweet potatoes and enjoyed makingblackberry and raspberry jam. She loved bacon, too, and was sure todrain the grease from every batch, then soak it up with a big piece ofbread and eat it.
Despite her lack of education, she loved reading...mostly newspapersand the Bible. Grandchildren often saw her stooped over thescriptures, magnifying glass in hand, sounding out the larger words inher high-pitched voice. She stayed close to her beloved descendantsby often staying in the homes of her children for up to six weeks at atime.
When she died on Feb. 12, 1953, the first grandsons through each ofher children acted as pall bearers at her funeral in Wingate. MaryHanna's life had spanned the administrations of 18 Presidents, fromLincoln to Eisenhower." [Transcribed by, SLJuhl, 27 Oct 2005]

The body is at the Johnson Funeral Home where it will remain forservices at 2 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.Mr. Douglass was born Sept. 30, 1883 in New Market, Ind., the son ofHenry and Alice LaBaw Douglass. VEEDERSBURG -- (CNS) Four persons are dead and two others are undertreatment at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Danville, as a result of anauto-train crash at 5 p.m. Sunday in Veedersburg. The dead: JohnNance, driver of the car, overseas veteran; Louise Douglas Nance, 21,his bride of a few weeks; Gerald Dean Douglas, 6, and Richard ClarenceDouglas, 3, small brothers of Mrs. Nance. All are of Veedersburg.The injured: Doris Mae Douglas, 14, Veedersburg, sister of Mrs.Nance, skull fracture and abrasions on legs condition fair. EugeneNance 14, near Wayne town, brother of Mr. Nance, possible skullfracture, cuts and shock. Attending physicians are: Dr. C.B. McCord,Veedersburg, and Drs. H.F. Hooker and Jean Moore Danville. The smallsedan driven by Nance was struck at a crossing near the Montezumadepot by a fast Nickel Plate freight, the eastbound No. 42, fastestfreight on the Veedersburg line. Bodies were thrown from thewreckage, some a distance of 50 feet. Bodies of the four victims weretaken to the Fisher Funeral Home here, following an investigation byCoroner Charles Fishero and State Patrolman Clarence Short. A NickelPlate representative was expected Monday to investigate for therailroad, with assistance of Fishero. The family had left their homea short distance away and were en route to visit at the Earl Buttshome. Mr. Nance was killed instantly, and his bride died en route tothe office of Dr. C.B. McCord. The Douglas children died as they werebeing placed in an ambulance to be taken to Danville. The boys, theirsister, Doris, and Mrs. Nance are children of Everett and (Elva) CecilDouglas, Veedersburg. The Veedersburg, Ind. train-auto crash of a week ago took its fifthvictim in the death at 9:15 p.m. Saturday in St. Elizabeth Hospital of Doris Mae Douglas, 14, Veedersburg, from injuries received in thecrash. Doris Mae suffered a fractured skull and internal injuries inthe accident that resulted in her death Saturday evening. The injuredgirl never regained consciousness following the crash. John Nance,driver of the car, was killed instantly in the crash with a NicklePlate Railroad fast freight train, his bride of a few weeks, LouiseDouglas Nance, 21, died en route to the office of Dr. C.B. McCord,Veedersburg; two small children, brothers of Mrs. Nance, Gerald DeanDouglas, 6, and Clarence Douglas, 3, died as they were being placed inan ambulance to be brought to a hospital in Danville. A sixthoccupant of the car, Eugene Nance, 14, brother of John, is a patientin St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment of a possible skull fracture,and numerous cuts and bruises received in the accident. Mrs. Rice suffered acoronary thrombosis Sunday morning and bacame a patient at thehospital Monday. I was referring to my Aunt Alice Douglass . She was the oldestdaughter of 6
of Howard Douglass and Eva Grace Dudley. They had 6 sons too.
I have her obit . She was almost 100 when she died several years ago.
Kay Douglas living in La Fayette is a Douglas by marriage.
Most of her information is on those elusive zip disks.
She told me that sitting on her son's porch in Crawfordsville shecould look
just two blocks away on the land that was Joesph Douglss property.
Samuel had the 4th place down and the Nutt family mansion was onthe
other side of Joseph .
She gave me a description of Jeremiah and MK's trip down the Ohio and
various trails to Indiana. I imagine the Redenbaugh's followed thesame
path.
My g. grandma worked in the home of the Nutt family and thus metBriley.
She mentioned the Joseph Douglass who was a bit of a familyblacksheep
and his trail for shooting and killing two men. He was acquitted of
murder and changed his life. From here he married a second time andhad a
family. I haven't mentioned him much because some families don'tlike to
hear the black nature parts.

"JERRY AND MARY (STOUT) BURK
His given name was Jeremiah, but folks just called him "Jerry" or"Jake". Born Aug. 19, 1896 in Brown Township, Jeremiah Caleb Burk wasthe seventh of 11 children of George Washington and Mary Hanna(Douglas) Burk. Jerry quit school after the third grade and left hometo work in New Market, Montgomery County, Indiana on the farm of hisbrother-n-law, Fred Wray.
In 1916 he landed a job with the Pennsylvania Railroad, starting outas a section hand, tamping ties for $1.75 a day. From 1915 to 1917,he worked also as a guard at the Indianapolis 500 (Speedway in MarionCounty, Indianapolis, Indiana).
Around 1915, Jerry attended a Stout family reunion. There he met hisfuture wife, Mary Hazel Stout, daughter of William Everett and Eva(Michaels) Stout. They dated for 12 or 13 years before marrying onDec. 26, 1931 at the United Brethren Church in Crawfordsville.
The Depression had cut into Jerry's hours with the railroad, so soonafter the wedding they headed to New Market to take on additionalwork. Jerry found it with a local funeral home, preparing bodies.Further income came from lighting a;; the gas lights in New Marketeach evening. They returned to Crawfordsville in late 1934.
During World War II, Jerry was often away in Illinois, cleaning upaccidents and keeping the rails clear to Chicago, the rail hub of thenation.
Mary was born in Montgomery County on Apr. 11, 1897. She attendedBreaks School as a young girl, about seven miles northwest ofCrawfordsville and would be picked up each morning in a horse drawn"hack". Her schooling ended after the eighth grade.
Mary enjoyed playing piano, with the bulk of her repertoire comingfrom her church hymnal. While Jerry was a Baptist, Mary served in theUnited Brethren Ladies' Aid at her church, Mount Zion where herdaughter, Jerrine, later married Gordon "Gary" Witt.
Both parents were entirely devoted to their children, Jerrine and Bob. Mary died on Nov. 7, 1960.
The following month, on Dec. 23, 1960, Jerry was nearly killed whenhis Crawfordsville home at 210 High Street burned to the ground withhim inside.
Burn treatment was a rough way to begin retirement for Jerry, who hadlabored 45 years for the Pennsylvania Railroad without missing a dayof work. A new house was built on the site of the old one, and intime his greatest joys came from growing lot of grandchildren.Jerrine and her husband Gordon "Gary" Witt gave him four: Terry,Cindy, who married Randy Arnold; Julieann, who married W. ScottFisher; and Susan, who married Edward Steele, Bob and Jackie (Craig)Burke had two: Jayne and "B.J."
Jerry passed away on July 24, 1984 in Crawfordsville. Ninegreat-grandchildren now claim him as an ancestor: Allison, Eric, andMichelle Fisher of Fruit Heights, UT; Sydney, Stephen, and MallorySteele of West Palm Beach, FL; and Bambi, Rebecca, and Benjamin Arnoldof Marathon, FL." Death claimed a C. & E.I. locomotive engineer Sunday, July 18, 1937,when Lewis Henry Douglas 35, died at home on State Road 34 one-halfmile east of Foster Road in Indiana. Formerly a resident of Danville,Mr. Douglas moved about eight months ago to the home where he died at9 a.m. He was born in Fountain County, Ind., April 2, 1902, son ofWalter and Mabel Brooks Douglas. He was a member of the Brotherhoodof Locomotive Engineers and Firemen and of Benson Chapel M.E. Church.

"Jobs were scarce during the depression, so I thought the best thingto do would be to enter the Army," said Walter L. Douglas, son of Mr.and Mrs. Walter M. Douglas, 3 Cronkhite St. Douglas joined the Armyin August, 1928, and last week, 20 years later, he retired from theAir Force at Chanute Field (near Champaign, Illinois) and received aletter of merit from the commanding general there.
Douglas attended Danville High School (Vermillion County, Illinois)and worked as helper at the C&EI shops prior to his military service.Before World War 2, he served in the Phillipine Islands and duringhostilities served four years in Alaska. He saw service in theAsiatic-Pacific, and European Theaters after the war.
He has served at various bases throughout the United States andattended aircraft mechanics school at Chanute Field, Douglas Aircraft,Santa Monica, Calif., and the Boeing B29 school at Seattle, Wash.

There is a side story: When Dorothy was readied after her death fortransport from Santa Barbara, CA. to Indiana for her funeral andburial, her daughter Joan left California at the same time, andexpected Dorothy in her casket to arrive at the same airport at nearlythe same time in Indianapolis, IN. ; However, when Joan and Joyce(dau.) inquired at the Indianapolis Airport (Joyce drove to pick Joanup at the airport) if Dorothy had arrived on time, she had been lost!Her casket was not transported on the same plane as her daughter hadbeen on. The plane that Dorothy was on had been re-routed to anotherdestination-Canada. It took some time and some tense negotiations,but Dorothy was eventually found, and did arrive on time for herservices that were scheduled for Tuesday morning. Later, from anervous release, the comment was made: "Mother was almost late to herown funeral. And knowing Mother, if she were aware of things, shewould have gotten a laugh out of what happened."
