- Regicide. Jones was selected as one of the king's judges, attended the trial with great regularity, and signed the death-warrant (Noble, Lives of the Regicides, i. 372).
- (Research):His descendant, Captain James Jones, later Skelton, had a daughter, Jemima, who married Charles, 1st Marquess of Cornwallis. This contadicts the statement that Cathering and he had no issue.
Possible links to Col. Philip Jones of Fonmon Castle, who was 'called to the upper House by Cromwell
