Penelope Hughes-Hallett, who died on April 1 aged 82, was the author of books on Jane Austen and the Lake poets, and most notably of The Immortal Dinner, a strikingly original work taking as its starting point a dinner-party given in 1817 by the painter Benjamin Haydon.
