"VILLAGES: Millersburg township has two villages, Millersburg andJoy. The former is the oldest laid-out town in the county (MercerCo., IL) back from the river, and has a history connected with thecounty second to none in importance. It was laid out in 1836 by JohnMiller, after whom the town and township was named. Of the Millerfamily there were John, George, Abraham, Isaac, and Philip, who werebrothers, and Abraham Jr., son of George. Abraham Jr. is now livingin Oregon. The Millers came to Mercer county from Indiana (they wereformerly from Tennessee), and located in Perryton at Sugar Grove in1834. Abraham Jr., was one of the first county clerks of Mercercounty....page 208...Two years later the town of Millersburg was laidout by the Miller brothers, who had previously settled in anothertownship, about 1834. Page 212...Abraham Miller Jr., is said to havebuilt the first dwelling-house...page 497...ORGANIZATION...an electionwas held on April 4, 1854, at the school house in district No. 1...itwas decided to elect four poundmasters, and the (page 498) ones chosenwere: ...Michael Miller,...One mile north of Millersburg, on a highridge of ground covered with oaks, is located the Millersburg cemetery(Oak Ridge). This ridge of ground extends toward the north slopesgently to the east and west. The lettering on many of the old headstones still standing has been obliterated by the elements, showingthat the place has been in use for that purpose for many years. Page 26-"The settlement north of the river (Edwards River) was alsobegun in 1834 when Benijah Lloyd settled there. He was soon joined bythe Millers, the source of the town name...Two villages wereorganized, one on each side of the river. They were Millersburg andJoy.
