Notes |
- A farmer
In October 1797 - an Andrew Caverhill and Thomas Caverhill were at Bonjedward and a Thomas Caverhill was at Houston (Ulston) - Farm Horse Tax Roll.
In the 1700's there appears to have been two men by the name of Thomas Caverhil; about the same age and living in the vicinity of Jedburgh. Perhaps they were first cousins?
One Thomas Caverhill was a Wright and Merchant in Jedburgh and he appears to have been the one who married Jane Jerdon (Jean Jerdone/Jerdan etc) and later Jean Douglas.
A Thomas Caverhill appears to have been a nephew of Archibald Jerdon of Bonjedward (who was previously known as Jerdon/Jerdone Caverhill). This must have been another and later Thomas Caverhill as Archibald Jerdon was not baptised till 5/3/1780 in Jedburgh. The parents of Jerdon/Jerdone Caverhill were Thomas Caverhill and Jean (Jane) Jerdon (Jerdone/Jerdan). Their other child was Jean Caverhill, born 23/3/1778 and baptised on 4/4/1778 in Jedburgh. (If Jean Jerdon was baptised on 23/12/1739 in Jedburgh her father was Andrew Jerdan).
The other Thomas Caverhill (of the two of similar time period etc) was a Farmer at Ulston and he appears to be the one who married Isabel Renwick c1769 in Jedburgh - this Thomas Caverhill was born in 1737 and died in Ulston in 1825 at the age of 88. He was the son of an Andrew Caverhill who was a tenant at Bonjedward. This Thomas Caverhill was the father of Janet/Jenet Caverhill who married George Douglas the Innkeeper in Jedburgh - this is verified by her age of 32 on a gravestone in the Jedburgh Abbey Graveyard in Jedburgh. (Janet or Janet Caverhill the daughter of the other Thomas Caverhill - the Wright and Merchant - was some years older).
It has also been said that the Thomas Caverhill who married Jane Jerdon and Jean Douglas was a nephew of an Andrew Caverhill of Jedburgh (and Bonjedward too?)
The Andrew Caverhill who was the father of Thomas Caverhill 1737 was born in 1704 in Jedburgh (his father was a Thomas Caverhill) so the Andrew Caverhill at Bonjedward in 1797 was obviously a later Andrew Caverhill.
Andrew Caverhill 1704 was baptised on 26/11/1704 at Jedburgh. He married Agnes Madder on 3/8/1736 at Jedburgh. Besides having Thomas Caverhill in 1737 they also had Elisabeth Caverhill baptised on 31/5/1747 at the Jedburgh Associate Congregation Church, Jedburgh and Agnes Caverhill baptised on 23/4/1749 also at the same Jedburgh Church. It is also likely that they had Jenet Caverhill baptised on 5/5/1745 at the Jedburgh Associate Congregation Church and Margaret Caverhill born in Jedburgh on 21/2/1739 - the father of Jenet and also of Margaret was an Andrew Caverhill.
- (Research):Jean Douglas/Douglas the second wife of Thomas Caverhill the Wright and Merchant in Jedburgh was the daughter of a John Douglass. Jean may have been the Jean Douglas born at St Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian on 29/1/1749 to John Douglas and Elizabeth Sellars. Moreover, Jean's first child and daughter with Thomas Caverhill was an Elizabeth.
