A monumental inscription in Beverley Monster gives his death date as 26 December 1905 and reads: "To the Glory of God/ and in loving memory of/ Colonel/ Douglas Campbell de Wend/ late of the Duke of Wellington's Regt./ in which he served 32 years and for 5 years/ commanded the 15th Regtl. District/ Son of Major J D de Wend (44th Regt.)/ and grandson of/ Major E Michael de Wend (60th regt.)/ died at Beverley 26th Decr. 1905 aged 62"
