- His daughter Martha Macon Jones is the mother of Frances Jones and grandmother of Martha Dandridge, (wife of George Washington). Martha Macon .
First theory: Gideon Macon's parents were from Loire, France, but Gideon had to have either been born in England or have become an English citizen to have been permitted to come to Virginia since only English citizens could live in the colony at the time. Since his family was believed to have been Hugenot or of Hugenot descent, they may have lived for a time in England. Many Hugenots fled France during the French Wars of Religion.
Second theory: Gideon Macon is the son of William Macon and Ann Garland. William was born in Nottingham, England in 1615 and sailed to Virginia Colony aboard the Merchant Ship "Bonaventure" in 1634. Upon Ann's death in 1699, she left her estate to Gideon Macon and his children.
Who were Gideon's parents? The Controversy: See: Cage website: Gideon Macon's Ancestors
There is no way that Gideon Macon was born in France of French parents. Alethea Jane Macon seems to agree in her book, "Gideon Macon of Virginia and Some of His Descendants", and "Allied Families", on page 6, she says, "...Louis de Macon...his son Gabriel de Macon married Catherine de la Bielle, ditte de Serre. The statement has been made repeatedly that Gideon Macon was a descendant of these Macons, whose line is given in some detail in the 'Armorial General de la France'. However, THE RECORD DOES NOT CONVINCINGLY BEAR OUT THE CLAIM. Especially significant is the absence of all given names found in the American family of Macon." (French given names).
Gideon Macon came to Virginia sometime before 1672.[1]
Gideon Macon's place of birth may have been Auverne, France according to Familytreemaker source which based the research on typed notes in files in the Clayton Historical Library, Houston, TX and mentioned a total of 160 sources. Gideon and his wife were naturalized 6-20-1682 and baptized 6-22-1682.
